THIRD GENERATION
19.  Esther Carpenter was born on 21 Aug 1802 in Brattleboro (Windham) VT.
[141] She was listed in Carp-Mem under #4048. [142]
She was married to Moses Bennett.  Moses Bennett was born about 1802.

Esther (Carpenter) Bennett resided in Minnesota and Wisconsin in 1848.  She belonged to the 1st Congregrational Church.  Her occupation was general store and ashery.

Story from Cuyahoga Co OH History Book, date unknown, sometime after 1940, pg 94-95.  "Josiah Carpenter............The children of Josiah and Lois.......Esther married Moses Bennett of Minnesota.......

1820 - Esther Carpenter and Moses O Bennet (only one t), both of Strongsville, were married on 16 Nov 1820, Cuyahoga Co OH, by Abijah Haynes, Justice Peace.  Recorded in Vol 1, pg 150.

1830 Cuyahoga Co OH, Strongsville, Moses O BENNETT, males 2 under 5, 2 5-10, 1 30-40; females 2 under 5, 1 20-30.  (Moses and Esther had 6 children between their 1820 marriage and 1830 census??)

1822-1838, Children born in OH.

1839-1843, - Children born in WI, Charles born Dec 1839; Lewis born 1842; Levi born 1843.

1840 census should show this family in WI according to the place of birth listed for children, or possibly still in OH, but I cannot find them in either record.

1850 Kenosha Co WI, Town of Pike, 17 Aug 1850, #93-94, M O BENNETT, 53, male, farmer, RE value $8000, VT; Esther, 46, female, VT; Prosper, 28, male, Inn keeper, OH; Leonard, 26, male, house carpenter, OH; Paris, 22, male, clerk, OH; Delia, 22, female, school, OH; Caroline, 19, female, school, OH; Josiah, 16, male, farmer, school, OH; Nathan, 14, male, school, OH; Lydia, 13, female, school, OH; Edward, 12, male, school, OH; Charles, 10, male, school, WI; Lewis, 8, male, school, WI; Levi, 7, male, school, WI.  (Children missing are George b abt 1825; Calista b abt 1829; and Permelia.)

1852-1853, Blue Earth Co MN was settled in 1852 and became a county in 1853 from unorganized territory.  It appears this family moved there about that time, or after 1855 per the record below.

1855 Wisconsin State Census, Kenosha Co WI, Somers Twp, M O BENNETT.  (No other information)

1857 Minnesota Territorial & State Census, Blue Earth Co MN, 9 Oct 1857, #1-1, M O BENNETT, 58, male, farmer, VT; Esther, female, 51, female, VT; George, male, 31, farmer, OH; Nathan, male, 21, carpenter, OH; Edward, male, 19, farmer, OH; Chas, male, 17, farmer, WI; Louis, male, 16, WI; Levi, male, 15, WI; Clestia, female, 28, OH; Caroline, female, 24, OH.  (Seven children are missing, either gone from home, married, or died: Prosper, Leonard, Pharis/Ferris, Fedelia, Permelia, Lydia, Josiah.)

1865 Minnesota Territorial & State Census, Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato, #440, Esther BENNETT, Calista, Edward, Charles, Levi, (3 males and 2 females, 3 in service of US).

1870 - I do not find Esther Bennett or Moses O Bennett on the 1870 census record.  The record for Blue Earth Co MN is too light to read.  The only Bennett that might fit is Nathan and the index is all I can read.

1875 Minnesota Territorial & State Census, Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato Twp, #107, Esther BENNETT, 72, female, white, VT US US; Casista, 45, female, OH VT VT.  (Also 2 houses away are son Nathan and family and son George.)

Moses O. Bennett

He was the brother of Maria Bennett, wife of his brother Zacary.
They lived in Minnesota. They had 15 children.

Moses O Bennett was one of the first settlers in extreme SE part of Strongsville twp, Bennett's Corners was named for him.

I find Moses Bennett on census, see Esther Carpenter notes.  I cannot find Moses or Esther Bennett on 1840 or 1870 census.

Moses O Bennett died sometime after 1860 and there is no findagrave listing for him at this time, Sept 2009.

11659. Prosper Bennett

1850 census at home, Kenosha Co WI, Town of Pike, 17 Aug 1850, Prosper, 28, male, Inn keeper, OH.

1850 Yuba Co CA, Deer Creek Mine, 23 Oct 1850, #78-78, Jno GILLCOAT, 44, male, miner, GA; Josiah BENNET, 16, male, miner, OH; P BENNETT, 28, male, miner, OH; Leonard BENNETT, 27, male, miner, OH.  (One other miner here also, no relationship.)  Note this is the second census for 1850 that lists these 3 Bennett brothers.

1857 not at home on Minnesota Territorial & State Census.

1858 - Prosper Bennett married Estill (last name unknown) about 1858, probably in CA.

1860 - Prosper Bennett lived at Vernon California in 1860.

1860 Sutter Co CA, Vernon Twp, 26 July 1860, #862-782, P BENNETT, 37, male, farmer, OH; Estill, 32, female, domestic, NY; Alice, 1, female, CA; F A SMITH, 40, male, farmer, ??; A CARPENTER, 30, male, farmhand, OH; T CONOR, 40, male, farmhand, IRE.  Also next door #861-781, E W BENNETT, 31, male, farmer, OH; Katharine, 34, female, domestic, NY; Eugene, 5, male, blind, CA.  (Who is this E W Bennett?)  Same Eugene Bennett on 1870 Alameda Co CA, Oakland, 1 Aug 1870, attending school at deaf, dumb & blind Asylum, line 25, Eugene Bennett, 15, male, white, blind, CA.

1860-1870, Prosper Bennett possibly died between 1860 & 1870.

1870 - I do not find any trace of Prosper or Estill Bennett on the US census index for 1870.  There is a possibility in 1870 Sacramento Co CA, Lee Twp, Sac City PO, #33-30, Celestia BENNETT, 42, female, white, keeping house, NY; Charles, 11, male, white, at home, school, CA; Alice, 9, female, white, school, CA; John, 6, male, white, CA; Henry, 3, male, white, CA.  (They are in the household of John C GRUBBS or TUBBS, 40, male, white, miner, NY.  There is also a male laborer and a male saloon keeper in this household.  The child, Alice age 9, and Celestia's place of birth as NY makes this a possible fit even though Alice's age is off by a couple of years.)  There is also in 1870 Sacramento Co CA, Lee Twp, #30-27. Frank Bennett, male, white, 44, farmer, NY; Thos, male, white, 14, at home, NY.

1880 - I do not find any trace of Prosper or Estill Bennett on the US census index for 1880.  I do find a Cestilia, wife of Franklin Bennett with the same family as the 1870 census above.  See below.  After looking at the 1870 & 1880 census records I do not feel this is my family but I am leaving the census in this file for the time being.

1880 (possibility)  Sacramento Co CA, Lee Twp, 16 June 1880, pg 296-C, #156-162, Franklin BENNETT, white, male, 54, married, farmer, NY NY NY; Cestilia, white, female, 53, wife, married, keeping house, NY NY NY; Thomas, white, male, 24, son, single, farm laborer, CA NY NY; Charles, white, male, 21, son, single, farm laborer, CA NY NY; Allice, white, female, 19, dau, at home, school, CA NY NY; John, white, male, 16, son, school, CA NY NY; Grant (Henry on

BENNETT, 28, male, miner, OH; Leonard BENNETT, 27, male, miner, OH.  (One other miner here also, no relationship.)  Note this is the second census for 1850 that lists these 3 Bennett brothers.

1857 - Leonard was not at home on Minnesota Territorial & State Census.  He was probably in California at this time.

1860 Placer Co CA, Wisconsin Hill, 5 Jul 1860, #1966-1941, Chapin BENNET, 30, male, miner, NY; Josiah, 24, male, miner, NY; Leonard, 38, male, miner, NY; George DOTE, 44, male, miner, ENG.  (This appears to be the Leonard and Josiah, sons of Esther Carpenter and Moses O Bennett, but they should be born in OH.)

1870 - I do not find a Leonard Bennett that would fit this person on the 1870 US census index.  He should be in California, but I do not find him.

1880 Mendocino Co CA, Round Valley, 24-25 June 1880, pg 227-D, #135-140, Josiah BENNETT, white, male, 46, single, stock raiser, OH VT NY; Leonard BENNETT, white, male, 56, brother, single, stock raiser, OH VT NY.

11668. Nathan Bennett

I believe the census records I have listed are the correct Nathan although he listed his parents born in NY.

1850 census at home, Kenosha Co WI, Town of Pike, Nathan, 14, male, school, OH.

1857 at home, Minnesota Territorial & State Census, Blue Earth Co MN, Nathan, male, 21, carpenter, OH.

1860 Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato Twp, Mankato PO, 7 June 1860, #307-289, Nathan BENNETT, 25, male, farmer, RE value $500, PP value $75, married in yr, OH; Julia A, 18, female, married in yr, OH; Caroline BENNETT, 27, female, OH.  (Caroline Bennett is sister of Nathan.  Close by is father & mother, M O Bennett & family and brother George Bennett.)

1865 Minnesota Territorial & State Census, Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato Twp, #444, Nathan BENNETT, Julia, Nelson E, (2 males, 1 female).

1870 Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato Twp, 26 June 1870, Nathan BENNETT, 25 (should be 35), male, white, farmer, RE value $1500, PP value $543, male eligible to vote, OH; Julia A, 29, female, white, keeping house, OH; Nelson E, 6, male, white, MN; Charlotte, 2, female, white, MN.

1875 Minnesota Territorial & State Census, Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato Twp, #105, Nathan BENNETT, 39, male, OH VT VT; Julia A, 32, female, OH NY NY; Nelson E, 10, male, MN OH OH; Charlotte E, 7, female, MN OH OH; Ann C, age 1, female, MN OH OH; George (BENNETT), 50, male, OH VT VT.

There are 2 children buried in Tivoli Cem, where Nathan and Julia A Bennett are buried.  Can either of these children be the child that had died, per 1900 & 1910 census record for Julia.  Gracie L Bennett (1876-1877) and Moses O Bennett (2 Aug 1863-Oct 1864).  Either of these dates would fit their family.  Daughter Ann Caroline Bennett named one of her daughters Grace L, see 1920 census below.  One of these children could be a child of Lewis Bennett, brother of Nathan.

1880 Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato Twp, 2 June 1880, pg 300-C, #22-22, Nathan BENNET (sp), white, male, 45, married, farmer, OH VT VT; Julia A, white, female, 39, wife, married, keeping house, OH NY NY; Nelson, white, male, 15, son, at home, school, MN OH NY; Charlot E, white, female, 12, dau, school, MN OH NY; Caroline, white, female, 7, dau, school, MN OH NY.  (Note the spelling of Bennet.)

1905 Minnesota Territorial & State Census, Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato, 12 June 1905, Nathan BENNETT, male, white, 70, farmer, OH OH OH; Julia N(?), female, white, 63, OH NY NY; Nels E, male, white, 40, laborer, MN OH OH; Lottie E, female, white, 27, school teacher, MN OH OH; Fannie B, female, white, 35, school teacher, MI MI MI.  (Who is this Fannie?)

1865 Minnesota Territorial & State Census, Blue Earth Co MN, Mankato, #440, Esther BENNETT, Calista, Edward, Charles, Levi, (3 males and 2 females, 3 in service of US).

I feel the information from here down is probably this Edward Bennett but do not have a definite link to the family of Esther Carpenter Bennett and Moses O Bennett.  The 1880 census listing sister Clista is probably the link needed for this tie.  He also named a son Edward Moses or Moses Edward.

1870 (possibility) Waseca Co MN, Waseca village and PO, 6 June 1870, #40-42, Edward BENNETT, 30, male, white, butcher, RE value $3000, PP value $500, OH; Eliza J, 26, female, white, keeping house, NH; George, 2, male, white, MN; James, age 2/12, born May, male, white, MN; Louis LUCH, 26, male, white, works in butcher shop, Prussia.  (George, age 2, is listed as a male on this census but as a female on 1880 census.)  This son James listed here is on findagrave.com as "James Bennett, 1870-1872", buried Woodville Cem, Waseca, Waseca Co, MN.

1885 (possibility) Minnesota Territorial & State Census, 16 May 1885, Waseca Co MN, Edward BENNETT, 46, male, white, OH; E Jennie, 43, female, white, NH; Georgia, 17, MN; Jennie, 11, MN; E M, 5, MN; Louisa R ROBINSON, 28, MA.

1910 (dau) King Co WA, Seattle 14th ward, 15 April 1910, #16-16, Wm T CAMPBELL, head, male, white, age 39, married first time 16 yrs, RE agent, own free house, MN IL WI; Jennie D, wife, female, white, 36, married first time 16 yrs, 0 children born and living, MN MA MA;  Donald T, father, male, white, 63, married first time 48 years, IL ENG ENG; Pearl J, mother, female, white, 57, married first time 48, 7 children born and living, WI ENG OH; Donald M, brother, male, white, 12, MI IL WI; Benoit W, adopted son, male, white, age 11, KS US US; J T SEALOCK, 40, hired man, OH WVA PA.

Dear John Carpenter:
It has been some time since we have been in contact. I assume that your efforts
on the Carpenter CD are progressing. I look forward to hearing more about it.
I have continued to worry about our discrepancy about Abner Carpenter who
married a Hawes girl. Where do my ancestors fit with your ancestors? Possibly
you have this all worked out by now. However, please let me see if the
information I have been collecting helps any.
The 1840 censuses are informative (the identification of names is my own effort
since, as you know, names were not yet included at the time of the 1840
census.):
CENSUS1:
Abner Carpenter - 1840 Census, Overton TN, (page 023) lists: 2 males < 5, 1
male 5-10 [Hesicar/Hezekiah], 1 male 60-70 [Abner], 1 female 5-10, 2 females
10-15, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female 40-50 [Hannah].
CENSUS2:
Abner Carpenter - 1840 Census Crawford Co PA 9 page 398-9) lists:  1 50-60 yr
old male (Abner=53), 1 30-40 female [Mary Barlow, Abner's second wife], 3 15-20
yr males (Aaron=21, Parley=16, Riley), 1 20-30 yr. male (Charles H.=23), 1 <5yr
male (Ezra?), 1 5-10 male , 1 5-10 female, 1 10-15 yr female (Sophia=15), 1
20-30 yr. female (Nancy). (Welcome was married in 1838.), [Abner's first wife,
Nancy, died in 1835] (the two young children may be Mary's by her first
husband)
I have been able to get into the Mormon on-line data base and have found Abner
Carpenter (AFN: BSF7-1G) born (1783 or 1808) in Bristol MA (Rehoboth) and died
in Abilene KS in June 1854. His wife, Hannah Hawes (AFN: BSF7-2M) was also born
in Bristol (1787 or 1812). Their children, all born in TN, are listed as:
Hesicar (AFN: 2J6M-2Q)(16 Sep 1834-14 Jan 1908) dying in Humbolt NE; Diane
(AFN: 162G-NNR)(b- 1848); Catherine (AFN: 162G-NN5)(b 1842); Elizabeth (AFN:
162G-NPC)(b 1844, died 1908 in Humbolt); and Ludicye (AFN: 162G-NQK)(b- 1846).
The IGI lists Abner's marriage to Hannah Hawes about 1833 In TN.
On the other hand, the IGI lists Nancy Hawes (AFN: Q82F-Q3) as being born in
West Brattleboro VT 17 Dec 1788 and dying in Guys Mills PA 2 Sep 1835. She
married Abner Carpenter (AFN: 1W0Z-KWD) in 1811 in Brattleboro. Abner was born
5 Jun 1787 in Brattleboro VT and died 4 Aug 1845 in Guys Mills PA.
The Mormon data shows that the Brattleboro Hawes were descended from
Massachusetts Hawes, living in the Boston and Dorchester areas. I have not
found the tie between the two Hawes women.
I am sorry that the mistake made by Amos B Carpenter about Hannah Hawes in the
Carpenter Memorial caused this confusion. I hope your and my efforts will
clarify the records.
Please note that I have a new e-mail address. MaxMaryRoh@cs.com . I look
forward to hearing how the Carpenters are coming along.
Regards, Max Roha.

SECOND GENERATION
12.  Abner Carpenter [70] was christened in 1787 in Brattleboro (Windham) VT.
He was born on 5 Jun 1787 in Brattleboro
(Windham) VT. [11]  He appeared on the census in 1820 in Brattleboro (Windham)
VT. [71]  1820 census lists 4 males <10
[Edward=8, Welcome=3, Charles H.=3, Aaron=<1], 1 male 18-26, 1 male 26-45
[Abner=33] and 1 female 26-45 [Nancy=32]
.  He appeared on the census in 1830 in Brattleboro (Windham) VT. [72]  1830
census lists 2 males 5-10 [Riley, Parley], 2
males 10-15 [Aaron, Charles H.=13], 1 male 15-20 [Welcome=14], 1 male 40-50
[Abner=53], 1 female <5 [Nancy] and 2
females 40-50 [Nancy=42, and probably her unmarried sister, Susanna Hawes=51].
He immigrated between 1830 and 1835
to Guys Mills (Crawford) PA.  Apparently moved from Brattleboro VT to Guys
Mills PA several years after his older brother,
Josiah, moved to Strongsville Ohio, about the same time his sister, Rhoda, and
family, moved to the Strongsville area..  He
appeared on the census in 1840 in Crawford Co., PA. [73]  1840 Census shows: 1
50-60 yr old male (Abner=53), 1 30-40
female [probably Mary Barlow], 3 15-20 yr males (Aaron, Parley, Riley?), 1
20-30 yr. male (Charles H.=23), 1 <5yr male
(Ezra?), 1 5-10 male , 1 5-10 female, 1 10-15 yr female (Sophia=15), 1 20-30
yr. female (Nancy?). (Welcome was married in
1838.), (Nancy had died in 1835, possibly after birth of the son listed here)
(The two young children are possibly Mary
Barlow's by her first husband.)  He died on 4 Aug 1845 in Guys Mills (Crawford)
PA. [2]  He was buried in Guys Mills
(Crawford) PA.  Union Cemetery, North east corner.  He has Ancestral File
number BSF7-1G.  He has Ancestral File number
1W0Z-KWD. [11]  He was listed in Carp-Mem under #1919c. [74]  Carpenter
Memorial: Lists only four of Abner's children:
Edward, Welcome, Charles and Nancy.  Old photo shows six of his children, as
elderly people: Parley, Riley, Sophia,
Welcome Allen, Charles Henry, Aaron E. (identity per Velva Jones Roha).
He was married to Nancy Hawes in 1811 in Brattleboro (Windham) VT. [11]
Contrary to Amos Carpenter's Carpenter
Memorial, Abner's wife was Nancy Hawes. The Abner Carpenter who married a
Hannah Hawes was born in (near) Rehoboth
MA and was possibly #1523 1/2 in the Carpenter Memorial (page 216, family 225)
Nancy Hawes [75,11,76] was born on 17
Dec 1788 in West Brattleboro (Windham) VT. [2,11]  She died on 8 Sep 1835 in
Guys Mills (Crawford) PA. [2]  At 47 years
old, possibly in birth of youngest son.  She was buried in Guys Mills
(Crawford) PA.  North east corner, Union Cemetery.
She has Ancestral File number Q82F-Q3. [11]  Nancy Hawes, daughter of Ebenezer
Hawes of Brattleboro VT, had a sister,
Eleanor, who married a very distant relative, Ezra Carpenter (Carpenter
memorial #5754), who settled in Guys Mills
(Crawford) PA a few years earlier than Abner and Nancy. Another sister,
probably unmarried, Susanna, lived with Abner and
Nancy in Brattleboro and in Guys Mills until the death of Nancy, when she moved
in with Ezra and Eleanor.  Abner
Carpenter and Nancy Hawes had the following children:
54 i. Edward H. Carpenter was born on 6 Sep 1812 in Brattleboro (Windham) VT.
[2] He died on 6 Nov 1835.  He was listed in Carp-Mem under #8465. [77]
+55 ii. Welcome Allen Carpenter.
56 iii. Sophia Carpenter was born on 4 Apr 1815 in Brattleboro (Windham) VT.
She died on 29 Mar 1818 in VT. [2]
+57 iv. Charles Henry Carpenter.
+58 v. Aaron Edward Carpenter.
+59 vi. Riley Carpenter.
+60 vii. Parley Carpenter.
61 viii. Nancy Carpenter was born between 1825 and 1830 in Brattleboro
(Windham) VT. She was listed in Carp-Mem under #8468. [78]
+62 ix. Sophia Carpenter.
63 x. Ezra Carpenter was born between
1835 and 1840. [79]  He died on 28 Sep 1850. [2]
He was married to Mary Barlow between 1835 and 1840 in Guys Mills (Crawford)
PA. [80,81] Abner was widowered September 8, 1835. His second wife,
Mary Barlow, was widowed October 6, 1834. 1840 census shows a 30-40 yr woman,
and some younger children, living with Abner and his family.  Mary Barlow [82]
was born bet 1800 and 1810.. [83]  Mary's
maiden name is unknown. We refer to her by her first married name, Mary Barlow,
out of convenience.  It is not know which
of the listed children are hers or which (i.e Rachael) are by Joshua's first,
unknown name, NY-born, wife. They are all listed
here together only for convenience. The fate of Mary Barlow Carpenter, after
the 1845 death of Abner, is unknown. Her two
Barlow children, living with her and Abner in 1840, and her two Abner Carpenter
children were probably still living with her
somewhere in western PA, possibly with a sister, daughter, new husband, etc.
under a different family name. Her two
Carpenter daughters, Mittie and Ella Carpenter, later married and appeared at
Carpenter family reunions in the late 1800's.
Abner Carpenter and Mary Barlow had the following children:
+64 i. Ella Carpenter.
+65 ii. Mittie Carpenter.

Max Roha's data: (See ggrandmother's notes for source references).

Dear John - It has been some time since we have had contact. I presume the
Carpenter CD project has been advancing.
I do not know if you are still adding material or whether the project is now
closed. I was recently in Meadville, PA, where my Carpenter branch lived. In
their Historical Society, I found some documents my mother, Velva Jones Roha,
generated in 1975, just before her death. They duplicate some and go beyond
the information I have sent you. I have copied them and put them into my
computer. For your consideration ...
Children of Abner Carpenter (1787-1845), son of James (1738-1829)
With Descendants of his son, Parley Carpenter (1824-1903)
