Notes

383. Abiah Carpenter in WILL

Number 206 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 75.
Family on page 131 (#102).  Abiah was not of age (21) in 1727 when his father
died.  Possible twin to Hannah.  Number 719 on page 132 is incorrect.
Currently no factual evidence supports his being a twin.

Abiah was a Captain of a sloop (a type of sailing ship) when he wrote his will
on 7 Sept 1729 on the island of St. Christophers.  He died there on 17 Sept
1729.  He probably died of illness.  See details of his will and witnesses on
page 75 and 76.   AF has death date as 13 Sept. 1729.

He was co-owner of a sailing sloop in the Caribbean trade.

Subject: Re: SC Archives for Carpenters

SC (South Carolina) was involved in trade with New England and several New England Carpenters established merchant or mariner outposts in the southern port cities.
The Oliver mentioned in the SC archives was a mariner, possibly ABC #208.
The Richard was a merchant from Rhode Island who traveled throughout the southeast -- you can read more about him in my article "Richard Carpenter, Pioneer Merchant of British West Florida and the Natchez District of Spanish West Florida," in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 72, No. 1 (March 1984), pp. 51-62.  He is ABC #621.
The Dan Carpenter in Camden SC is ABC #1525, pp. 216, 370.  (His brother Timothy #1527 was an itinerant Methodist preacher who settled in Tennessee.)
Lucy (Blanding) Carpenter, widow of Phanuel Carpenter ABC #2028, also lived in Camden SC.
**** The Abiah Carpenter may be ABC #719, who is unaccounted for in ABC.  Margaret and husband George Carpenter lived near Abiah and were probably related, but again, not enough evidence to prove anything.  ****
The later Carpenters in the piedmont counties were from PA, VA, and NC lines.  Lots of interesting possibilities in the South!
