417. Nehemiah Carpenter

Number 368 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 91
Family on page 166 (#161)  A blacksmith
SEE: Number 293 in the CM.  Birth and death dates are the same.
The death date is obviously in error (25 Apr 1821) in the Carpenter Memorial
and puts the birth date into question also.  See WILL and E-MAIL notes below.

CORRECTION: This family line goes through Col. Solomon Carpenter and NOT Capt.
Solomon Carpenter.

SAR:
U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970
Name: Nehemiah Carpenter
SAR Membership: 40018
Birth Date: 11 Mar 1731
Birth Place: Jamaica, Long Island, New York
Death Place: Goshen, New York
Spouse: Priscilla Carpenter
Children: Nehemiah Carpenter
Source Citation: Volume: 201; SAR Membership Number: 40018.

WILL: Extract of will of Nehemiah Carpenter, late of Jamacia, LI, now of
Goshen, Ulster, NY, a blacksmith.  "Mentions wife Priscilla, two sons Nehemiah
and Nicolas, and two daughters Phebe and Sally."  The will was executed
16 June 1783 and proved 25 July 1783.  SEE BELOW!

A Patriot who signed "The Revolutionary War Pledge" in Goshen, Orange County,
New York as an exempt over age 50.  He fled Jamacia, Long Island with his
family before the advancing British Army.  He joined the very Pro-American
Presbyterian Chruch in Goshen, NY.

Some records have a Nehemiah being born about 1723, however this Nehemiah
has a verified birth date per the CM.  It might have been another Nehemiah in
this family or not of this family born abt 1723.   SEE THE QUESTIONING ABOVE!

E-MAIL: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 From: Robin Carpenter Hi John:
Yes, I will send the full transcript of the NYHS abstract of Nehemiah's
1783 will, maybe over the weekend if I can get to it.
Meanwhile, you asked about when it was proved; the 1783 will was executed
June 16, 1783, and proved July 25 1783.  So for once we know pretty darned
closely just when was the death.  You can change your 1821 death straight
away.  (Not only does the will show he died in 1783, but it is clear that
the a8321 death is another case of confused Nehemiahs; the odds against two
Nehemiah Carpenters in the same town dying on the very same date is
astronomical.)  ... Robin.

WILL: (From Robin 3 April 2000)
Here is the NYHS Abstract (Vol XII) of the 1783 will of Nehemiah Carpenter
of Goshen--abstracted from Liber 36 Page 115:
In the name of God, Amen.  I, NEHEMIAH CARPENTER, late of Jamaica,
Long Island, but now a resident of Goshen, Ulster County, blacksmith, being
weak in body.  My family debts contracted at Goshen and funeral charges and
doctor's bills, etc., to be paid out of my moveable estate excepting one
bedstead and bed furnished, one cow, one hog, one large pewter platter, nine
plates, three pewter basons, four chairs, two chests, two little spinning
wheels, one large spinning wheel, which I leave to my wife, Priscilla
Carpenter, for her use.
The remainder of my moveable estate, after my debts are paid, to be
put at interest for the benefit of my loving wife, while my widow.  Whereas
my late father-in-law left a legacy to my wife, I give the same to my wife
during her life; at her death to be equally divided among my surviving
children.  With respect to my freehold estates, lying in Jamaica on Long
Island, the same are to be disposed of, and after my just debts due thereon
ar paid; the remainder to go to my sons, Nehemiah and Nicholas, two-thirds;
and my daughters, Phebe and Sally Carpenter, one-third of said remainder.
What other estate I may be possessed of, in like manner and proportion.  I
make my beloved Priscilla, my loving sons, Nehemiah and Nicholas Carpenter,
and my loving friend, Israel Smith, executors.
Dated June 16, 1783.  Witnesses, Joseph Carpenter, Amasa Mathews,
John Kortright, of the Precinct of Goshen.  Proved July 25, 1783.
-----------------------------------------------
RLC Notes:
  1.  This is clearly the Nehemiah that Seversmith has as son of Solomon
(b. c1690, d. 1762, ABC's #75) the early settler and proprietor in Goshen.
ABC has this Nehemiah #368 as a son of Solomon #96, and gives incorrect
death date 1821.
  2.  Seversmith's placement of this Nehemiah raises a couple of issues;
although we have no birthdate for this Nehemiah, he is a brother Solomon
born 1712, which would make him probably about 70 yrs old in 1783...yet he
has two unmarried daughters at that time according to his will.  Also odd
that this Nehemiah is a recent arrival to Goshen although his alleged father
Solomon arrived at least by 1720 when Nehemiah would have been a child--and
perhaps as early as 1714 with Nehemiah as an infant at most.
  3.  ADCSC (and others) give wife Priscilla as Priscilla Smith.  Does
anyone have a record of WHERE/WHEN this Nehemiah-Priscilla marriage took place?

One of his three daughters was not living by 1762. (Note the CM has it as

There is no doubt, if Thompson is correct, that it was this Nehemiah who moved
to Dutchess county, NY, but returned to Jamacia, LI and settled his father's
estate.  He was in Westchester county in 1783.  He served in a military
company in 1776.  He, in his will, mentions son Nehemiah, daughters Elizabeth,
Rebecca and Abagail, and Richard, son of my daughter Sarah.  The will was
proved 17 June 1821.
