Subject: [CARPENTER]
Mary Carpenter wife of Daniel; died August 20, 1859, 71st year, at Rochester
In the New York Herald it was reported on Wednesday, August 31, 1859, that
Mary Carpenter died "at Rochester, on Saturday, August 20" "wife of Daniel
Carpenter, in the 71st year of her age."
Daniel Carpenter of PortChester (Rye township), Westchester County, NY wrote
his will on the 5th day of July 1859. In it he refers to his wife Mary and
states what should occur if she "survives me." Daniel Carpenter died "at
PortChester, NY, on Friday, June 15" 1860, "in the 83d year of his age." This
is reported in the New York Herald issue of June 16, 1860.
Daniel's will was probated in WestChester and there is no mention of Mary
Carpenter in any of the papers. She must have died between the writing of he
will and the recording of the will.
Does anyone know of a specific relationship between the Mary Carpenter who
died in Rochester and this family of PortChester, NY? I believe that she is
the wife of Daniel Carpenter of PortChester. Two of their surviving children
at the time of Daniel's death are living in Brooklyn, NY. There is a son
William Carpenter who is not found at that time.
Last names used as middle names in the next generation that are unaccounted
for as yet are Byron and Greeley. Perhaps one of these was Mary's maiden
name.
Thanks for any leads.
Marianne

I am searching for information about Ezra CARPENTER (b. ca 1799 in Madison
Co., NY) and Minerva NICHOLS (b. ca 1803 in Oneida Co., NY). They came
to Chautauqua Co. as early as 1826 when their first child Maryett was born.
Other children (taken from census records) were: Biliny, b. 1833; Emily
b. 1833 (in Cattaraugus Co.); Catherine b. 1835 (in Cattaraugus Co.) m.
Elijah DELAND; Jane b. 1837 (in Chautauqua Co.) m. Rowland GARDNER; and
Reynolds b. 1839 (in Chautauqua Co.). The family lived in Sheridan for
at least 10 years (1845-1855) and lived in Pomfret in 1860.
I am a descendant of Catherine Carpenter Deland. Her daughter Estelle DeLand
married Joseph KNAPP and moved to McHenry Co., Illinois. I am particularly
interested in determining the parents of Ezra Carpenter and Minerva Nichols.
I would enjoy communicating with anyone researching these lines.
