7834. Jesse "Ike" Tanner

BOOK: See page 52 (for notes) of the Mowrey 1997 book. See book information
below:
UPDATE OF THE GENEALOGY OF THE NEW ENGLAND CARPENTER FAMILY OF ENGLISH
ORIGIN - THE VIRGINIA / WEST VIRGINIA BRANCH - SOME DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH
CARPENTER - PIONEER OF THE JACKSON RIVER - MOWREY"S VERSION.
BY TERRY LEE CARPENTER AND PAUL THOMAS MOWREY.
PRO BONO PUBLICO - PRIVATELY PUBLISHED, DOVER, OHIO, 1997.
BY PAUL THOMAS MOWREY.
PAGE 52: 2. Jesse "Ike" Tanner was born circa 1795, married 1st Mary "Polly"
Carpenter 14 August 1820 in Mason County (Mary was a daughter of Jesse and
Sarah Jane Riffe Carpenter) and 2nd Judith Carpenter (Judy was a daughter of
Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hamm Carpenter) circa 1837. All of Jesse and Judith
Carpenter Tanner's children 1837-1846 listed their parents as Jesse and Judy
Tanner when they married.  Judy died 10 October 1859 and is reportedly buried
in the "Old Tanner Cemetery" on Craig Ridge.  Mary Carpenter Tanner died in
childbirth with her last child, William, and is supposedly buried in the same
graveyard. Jesse Tanner married 3rd Lucinda Raines 11 February 1860 and died 26
March 1885. Lucinda was a daughter of Uriah and Massie (Hughes) Gandee, a widow
of Abraham Raines and a first cousin, but once removed, to Jesse Tanner through
the Hughes family. They are buried in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Spencer,
West Virginia. Jesse and Lucinda's (Page 52) children, 1862-1872, all listed
their parents as Jesse and Lucy or Lucinda when they married. Parental listings
offer substantial proof of whom Jesse Tanner married and when he married them.

NOTE: Jesse "Buffalo" TANNER Sr. AND Jesse "Ike" TANNER may or may not be the
same person.  I think maybe, but there is enough debate to allow two until
further details come forth.

Judith or Judy or Judah or Polly Carpenter

NAME: Judith was known as Polly, but her name is often spellt as Judy or Judah
instead of Judith.    See page 48 of the Mowrey 1997 book:
Per page 48: 11. Judith (17) Carpenter was born around 1809, married Jesse
"Ike" Tanner circa 1837 and died 10 October 1859 (Jesse reported her death in
Roane County.  Other records have her death in Braxton county, VA.
She was fifty years old and the daughter of J. and Elizabeth (Hamm) Carpenter
of Braxton (page 49) County. She and Jesse's first wife, Mary Carpenter
(daughter of Jesse and Sarah Jane Riffe Carpenter) are probably buried in the
old Tanner Cemetery on Craig Ridge.

MARRIAGES need claification.  Children conflicts.  Could there be 2 Mary
Carpenters?

15111. Riley See Notes Tanner

The Mowrey Book and this orginal record are again in conflict.  Riley is
listed as the son of Jesse "Ike" Tanner (Sr.) b. abt 1795 AND Jesse "Buffalo"
Tanner.

15112. Elizabeth See Notes Tanner

The Mowrey Book and this orginal record are again in conflict.  Elizabeth is
listed as the daughter of Jesse "Ike" Tanner (Sr.) b. abt 1795 AND Jesse
"Buffalo" Tanner.

15113. Sarah See Notes Tanner

The Mowrey Book and this orginal record are again in conflict.  Sarah
is listed as the daughter of Jesse "Ike" Tanner (Sr.) b. abt 1795 AND Jesse
"Buffalo" Tanner.

15114. Samantha Tanner

I, (the author of the Mowrey publication, Paul Mowrey)  place the
Samantha Tanner (born circa 1826) who is found in the 1850 census of
Jackson County, Virginia, here but not proven.

15115. Samuel Tanner Jr.

I, (the author of the Mowrey publication) place the Samuel Tanner Jr. (born
circa 1832) who is found in the 1850
census of Jackson County, Virginia and who signed the 5 December 1855 petition
for the formation of Roane County here, but not proven.

Lucinda (Gandee) Raines

LUCINDA WAS ABT 31 YRS YOUNGER TAN JESSE. LIVED IN ROANE CO WVA
IN CENSUS: 1860,70,80. THEIR LOG HOUSE BUILT BY JESSE WAS LOCATED ON
THEIR LARGE FARM WHICH IS NOW KNOWN AS THE ALVOID SECTION OF SPENCER,
WVA. THE CABIN SAT ON A KNOLL ACROSS FROM THE RAYMOND CARPER HOUSE NOW
STANDS.

SPOUSE: Jesse "Ike" or Jesse "Buffalo" Tanner?  The same person?

It is interesting to note that in the Mowrey book concerning this marriage,
there are no birth dates given for any of the children.  This is in variance
with all other families which at least show a year of birth.

15116. Minter Tanner

Minter Jackson Tanner was born 24 August 1862, died 3 June 1951 and  married 1
March 1887 Angeline Wine (daughter of Richard W. and Nancy (Miller)  Wine) and
2nd 3 April 1912 Ada Mae Perrill.

Confusion agin occurs in this marriage.  The Mowrey book shows this marriage
with 5 children, as entered in this record, but, the first birth, Richard
DeWitt is in 1914.  It is unlikely that Minter and Angeline were married in
1887, and had no children untill 1914!  However, Minter may have gone away for
that length of time, or whatever?

Angeline Wine

Angeline Wine was born around 1865 and married Minter J. Tanner 1  March 1887.
Minter was a son of Jesse and Lucinda (Gandee) Raines Tanner.

15117. Rosa Tanner

Rosa Tanner was born in July of 1866 and married Albert "Abe" Goff circa
1883, 2nd 3 March 1892 Augustus Droddy and 3rd Marshall e.Greathouse.

15118. Zelpha Mary Tanner

Zilpha Molly Tanner was born circa 1868, died 1937 and married Joe Smith.
In 1870 census she is called Zelpha age 2 yrs. b. Va.
In 1880 census she is called Mary age 12 b. Va.

7835. Mathias See Notes Carpenter

Mathias' father is believed to be Samuel Carpenter (1742) son of Joseph.
Not proven.

John, Here is a copy of some information written by my great
grandfather.  It is pretty interesting, but I doubt Mathias is the son
of Samuel since Mathias came from Holland according to this.  Very truly

15122. Eliz Carpenter

A daughter, first part of name "Eliz?".

7843. Samuel Carpenter

Samuel (17) Carpenter Jr. was born 26 March 1812, married Martha Allen
Hannah 9 October 1832 in Botetourt County, Virginia and died 5 July 1893 in
Covington, Alleghany County, Virginia.

Mary

NAME: Mary?

15124. Joseph Hannah Carpenter

Joseph Hannah (18) Carpenter was born 24 July 1834, graduated as a civil
engineer from Virginia Military Institute in 1856 and served as a captain of
the  Allegheny Roughs Light Artillery (Carpenter's Battery), 128 Regiment, 13th
Brigade,  5th Division of Virginia Militia during the Civil War. He was
severely wounded at the Battle of Cedar Mountain on 3 August and died from
his wounds on 5 February 1863.
W.I.A. = Wounded in Action.

15125. Harriet Elizabeth Carpenter

Harriet Elizabeth (18) Carpenter was born 22 February 1837 and died 29  May
1925, unmarried.

15128. Mary Catherine Carpenter

Mary Catherine (18) Carpenter was born 4 May 1844, married Dr. James Payne of
Falling Spring Valley, Virginia (date unknown) and died 21 November 1910.

15129. James McDowell Carpenter

James McDowell (18) Carpenter was born 4 September 1846, served in the
Carpenter Battery of artillery during the Civil War and died of his wounds 15
December 1865.
W.I.A. = Wounded in Action.

7844. Thomas Carpenter

Thomas (17) Carpenter was born in October of 1796 in Gallia County, Ohio,
married Sarah Wright circa 1830 and died after 1880 in Roane County, West
Virginia.
Sarah was the daughter of Basil (pronounced Bozzel) and Nancy Jones (Miller)
Wright and supposedly born around 1812. (Census and other records indicate an
earlier birth year circa 1803/1806. Nancy was the widow of Samuel Miller. They
were the parents of the Samuel Miller who married Rebecca Carpenter and Joshua
Miller who married Nancy Wolfe, daughter of Jonathan and Bridget (Runnion)
Wolfe. Basil Wright is said to have been a veteran of both the Revolutionary
War and the War of 1812. The Millers and Wrights became half
cousins of each other after this marriage.

There is as much disagreement over the age of Thomas (17) Carpenter's wife
and when he married her as there is in naming his father Jesse's family. Most
sources claim that Sarah Wright was born circa 1812 (She even has a tombstone
to that effect) and that she married Thomas about 1830. Her age in the
censuses and a study of the birth order in Basil and Nancy (Jones) (Miller)
Wright's family indicate that her birthyear was approximately 1803.
Martha (cl8l7), Joseph (c1820) and John A. W823) are usually thought of as
being children of Jesse but are probably offspring of his son Thomas,
although the best approximation of their marriage date is 1823. Some purists
may have a problem with this, but a legally recognized nuptial
has never been a necessary prerequisite to parenting.

Thomas Carpenter's family had a cabin and farm at the present site of the
state hospital in Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia as early as the 1820's.
This tract of land was particuliarly valuable because it encompassed a small
cave that contained the saltpeter so necessary for manufacturing
gunpowder. Hunting was essential to supplement whatever could be raised
on the farm and stored for winter. The meat and hides of these animals
could also be traded for table salt, lead and other valuable products in
Kanawha. On one accasion, Thomas acquired a complete set of
dishes for his wife, Sarah, and carried them across the mountains in a "wampus"
(a sling tied over the neck and one shoulder to carry things from the front.

Sarah E. Wright

Wright's family indicate that her birth year was approximately 1803. Martha
(cl8l7), Joseph (c1820) and John  A. c.1823) are usually thought of as being
children of Jesse but are probably offspring of his son Thomas, although the
best approximation of their marriage date is 1823. Some purists may have a
problem with this, but a legally recognized nuptial  has never been a necessary
prerequisite to parenting.
Following taken from the Mowrey book, page 176, Vol. III, in misc family
entries;
Sarah E. Wright was born circa 1803/05 died in July of 1872 and married  about
1823 Thomas Carpenter (born in October of 1796 in Meigs County, Ohio, died
after 1880 Roane County, West Virginia, son of Jesse and Sarah Jane "Jenny"
Riffe).
From the Mowrey book, page 180, Vol. III the following information is taken:
Nancy (Jones) Miller's marriage to Basil Wright after the death of her first
husband  Samuel Miller,  presents some timeline problems for the Carpenters. If
census records are to be  believed, then Sarah E. Wright (wife of Thomas
Carpenter) would have had to have  been born circa 1803/06 rather than the 1812
date that is usually assigned her.
In order to place Sarah in the family with some degree of certainly I am using
the birth date of 1803, which fits into the family.  Future research may
correct this assumption.

15133. Elizabeth or Eliza Carpenter

NAME: Eliza or Elizabeth.
Eliza (18) Carpenter (birthdate unknown) married Hiram Chapman before  1850.

15135. Dusky Carpenter

NAME: Dusky may have been a nickname?
In another part of the Mowrey Book is the following note which may relate:
John A. (17) Carpenter was born 1820-1823, married Mary E. Sharp circa
1850, resided in Jackson County in 1850 and died in Roane County after 1870.
(There is much evidence to suggest that Martha, Joseph and John A. were
actually children of Thomas (17) and Sarah (Wright) Carpenter and that
Stephen and Susan were children of John (16) and Sarah Ratcliff Carpenter.
Research is necessary!)

15136. Martha Carpenter

Martha (18) Carpenter was born circa 1817/20, unmarried in 1860.
May have died young.
NOTE: Her parents married about 1823!

15139. Julia Carpenter

Probably not the same Julia but interesting data!
ABRIDGED COMPENDIUEM OF AMERICA GENEALOGY, FIRST FAMILYS OF AMERICA
VOL. 4  PG 277
William Francis Hocking M.D.  1836--1903 of Yonkers New York, and
Cleveland, Ohio, married 1871, Julia Carpenter born 1848 Southbridge,
had issue; (a) Grace Louise born 1875, married  PROFESSOR WILLIAM H
RUNYON.

7851. John A. Carpenter

Jackson county is now in WV.
NAME: AKA "Dusky".

Mary Malinda Tanner

Here is another situation with an individual having two spouses named the John
Carpenter but who have different parents.  This Mary Malinda with the same
parents but listed as Mary, in one marriage, married John Carpenter.
Which one is the correct spouse is not known.
One of the Marys may have had for a father one of the two Jesse Tanners in the
file.

7853. Alfred Carpenter

Roane county is now VW.
CHILDREN: Ann born 1855 is not proven.
MARRIAGE: Was Alfred married to a Nancy Wolfe?  Or was this Nancy Miller's
former married name? Could Ann be of this other marriage?

15173. Ann Carpenter

Not proven as child.  Maybe child from another marriage?

7861. Jesse "Buffalo" Tanner Sr.

Jesse and Lucinda (Raines) Tanner his third wife, found in 1870 census
Roane Co. and 1880 Roane Co. WV.
Jesse Tanner Sr. called "Buffalo".

NOTE: Jesse "Buffalo" TANNER Sr. AND Jesse "Ike" TANNER may or may not be the
same person.  I think maybe, but there is enough debate to allow two until
further details come forth.

MARRIAGE:
From: Rick Greathouse

To: John R. Carpenter
Subject: Re: Samuel Tanner Regarding the disputed wife of Jesse Tanner to 1st Mary Polly Carpenter and 2nd Judith Carpenter or Judith Miller? I think Jesse stating that Judith's parents were J. & Elizabeth Carpenter on Judah's death certificate would be reliable. I think Jesse would have known whom the parents of Judith were. Death register entry for Judah Carpenter, line 41:

Mary Judith "Polly" Miller

Polly Miller, married first to her uncle John Carpenter, s/o Jeremiah &
Elizabeth Mann Carpenter. Her marriage is listed in Mason Co. (W)Va. as
Polly Carpenter, & Jesse Tonan, 4 Aug. 1820, there is also a Nancy Miller
& Jes Toner, 17 Aug. 1821. She is listed as Polly Miller Carpenter, a
widow.

NOTE: Marriage dates for Judith Carpenter and Mary Judith (Miller)
Carpenter (a widow) who married James Salisbury are the same.
The other Judith Carpenter (maiden name - Carpenter) may be listed in error.

In the 1850 US Census - Sydney is listed as the spouse of John S. Carpenter.  A Mary, on the same page, is the wife of Solomon Carpenter.

15178. Riley Tanner

Riley Tanner was born about 1839, married Nancy E. Collins`15 August 1865
and died before 27 December 1876 when Nancy E. (Collins) Tanner remarried.

The Mowrey Book and this orginal record are again in conflict.  Riley is
listed as the son of Jesse "Ike" Tanner (Sr.) b. abt 1795 AND Jesse "Buffalo"
Tanner.

15180. Elizabeth "Betsey" Tanner

Elizabeth "Betsey" Tanner was born circa 1842 and married Peter Pool   9
January 1867.

15182. Sarah E. Tanner

Sarah "Sally" Tanner was born around 1847 and married Isaac Greathouse  3
September 1863.

John, Thanks for the info... Regarding Sarah E. Tanner married Isaac B. Greathouse, there was a newspaper article written about her in the Reedy News, "124 Grand Children" in Jul 1931 a year before her death in 1932.
The submitter of the typed copy has stated that Fred Craig Sr., [ran several newspapers in Spencer], dropped it off to her in the 1960s while she was visiting family in Spencer. The first son she named Irvan Greathouse of Richwood was the grand-father of my father. Her death certificate is available here: Her son-in-law, Edward Tanner, whom married her daughter, America Tucker, was a little confused about whom her parents were, obviously. Sarah Elizabeth Tanner married a William Tucker after Isaac B. Greathouse's death on 29 Dec 1881. And some 50 years ago from date of newspaper article, she and Isaac were living on the land that belonged to Adam Goebel in 1932. Deeds: Leonard Simmons to Isaac Greathouse; Isaac Greathouse to J. Claude Bartlett; J. Claude Bartlett to Adam Goebel. Rick

Mary or Polly Carpenter

Peter and Mary Coger lived on Elk River on the tract of land that Peter bought
from Jeremiah Carpenter.
See page 48 of the Mowrey 1997 book.
She was widowed when her husband drowned in the Elk River on 10 Oct. 1866.

Lucinda (Gandee) Raines

LUCINDA WAS ABT 31 YRS YOUNGER TAN JESSE. LIVED IN ROANE CO WVA

It is interesting to note that in the Mowrey book concerning this marriage,
there are no birth dates given for any of the children.  This is in variance

15191. Zelpha Mary Tanner

In 1870 census she is called Zelpha age 2 yrs. b. Va.
In 1880 census she is called Mary age 12 b. Va.

15199. Elijah Tanner

Elijah Tanner was born about 1830 and married 1st Barsheba Nelson 21 November
1849 2nd Sarah E. Moore 3rd Eunice Cart and 4th Mary Sears.

15202. Dixon Tanner

Dixon Tanner was born about 1838 (idiotic).

15203. Eliza Tanner

Eliza Tanner was born around 1841 and married John Smith 23 May 1858.

15204. Joshua Tanner

Joshua Tanner was born about 1842 and never married.

Carpenters?

15206. Jefferson Tanner

Jeferson Tanner was born circa 1829 and married 4 July 1850 Nancy
Starcher (daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth (Nutter) Starcher).

15207. Andrew Tanner
