8227. John W. Carpenter

Number 945 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 158.
No family listed.
SEE: XVI - New York Biographical And Genealogical Historial, page 1405.
"John W. Carpenter, s/o William Carpenter - was b. at Pleasant Valley,
Jamacia, Long Island, 9 Jul 1769 and died 7 Feb 1834.  He succeeded to his
father's farm at Poughkeepsie, NY and lived the life of a country gentleman,
engaging in no active business.  He m. Mary Thorne, who was b. 26 Sep 1771..."
Four possibly five children.  One researcher thinks John W. Carpenter had more
children and maybe was at one time a traveling preacher in the south.
NOTE: This seems conflicting unless there was two John W. Carpenters.

MAYBE related to a son of this John W.?
One of the stories about your John or Jack Carpenter (b. March 4, 1800) was that he was the son of Andrew Jackson Carpenter.  Andrew Jackson Carpenter (Who changed his name) was an immigrant who supposedly came over from Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands and was born about 1774.

The John W. Carpenter (b. 4 March 1800) may have been the son of John W. Carpenter-21218 born 9 Jul 1769 Pleasant Valley, Queens, LI, NY and who died 7 Feb 1834 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, NY. He had three children named in the Carpenter Memorial and possibly 2 or 3 other children not named.   Notice I say may ...

I have found that some Carpenters who supported the Rebellion or the Confederates during the Civil War deliberately mislabel as "Zimmerman" Carpenters and thus not true "English" Carpenters.  The John W. Carpenter (b. 9 Jul 1769) I mentioned above was at one time a traveling preacher in the south or it may have been his son since the reference was from the 1830s.

The 1830s and 1840s were a time of great revivals in the United States.  Many of the traveling preachers who traveled the southern states preached the superiority of the White over the Indian and Black.  Many also stressed that property rights were more important than individual rights.  It was the generation born during this time that bled and died for their southern religious beliefs during the American Civil War of the early 1860s.

It is possible without proof that John W. had a son named John W.  Naming conventions would indicate that the first son be named after the paternal father.
And the first son, William  (b. 1792) is so named.  NOTE: This William was involved with the Society of Friends. His grandfather was married in the Reformed Dutch Church of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, NY. His father (John W. b. 1769) "succeeded to his father's (William b. 1740/1743) farm at Poughkeepsie, NY and lived the life of a country gentleman, engaging in no active business."
The next child is female and is named after the paternal mother - Hillegonte and the child has the name of Helache (or could this be the materal mother's name?)
The second son is named James after the maternal father.  The next son would have carried the father's first name - John - but that name is not given in the Carpenter Memorial.  If that son would have supported the south, he may have been disowned or declared "not a true Carpenter." Remember the Society of Friends or Quakers did not encourage violence and this would have created a family schism between brothers.

Rev. George N. Carpenter, Methodist Minister
Anorther Pioneer Gone
The grim reaper has again visited us and this time removed from earth one of our oldest and most respected
pioneers, Rev. Geo. N. Carpenter, the final summons coming to him at 6 o'clock, A.M., Nov. 30th [1891]. He had
been confined to his bed for about four weeks and succumbed at last to pneumonia. Deceased was born in the city
of Philadelphia, Pa., on Nov. 11th 1810, and was therefore at the time of his death, 81 years old. When he was 21
years old he commenced preaching, and in 1838 removed to Simcoe, Ont., and thence in 1850 to near Ingersoll,
Ont., where he resided until 1859, in that year coming to Michigan and settling upon the farm in Marathon township   on which he died.

He continued his ministerial duties almost uninterruptedly for sixty years, and was singularly successful as many in this neighborhood can testify. He was intensely loyal and when the war broke out, gave four of his sons to the
cause of the Union, and met only three of them at its close with a father's blessing, one having died of typhoid fever
in Arkansas. He was a living example of the doctrines he preached, and was universally loved and esteemed. He
had a family of twelve children, seven of whom survive him--four sons and three daughters. The funeral services
were held at the Methodist Church, Rev. John Tree officiating, and the remains were interred in Woodlawn
Cemetery.

He was the father of Rev. John Carpenter, Baptist Minister.

Rev. John & Jennie (Black) Carpenter were the parents of Stuart, Jennie, Agnes, John, Duncan, Augustus.

Still there seems to be a mix-up with Amanda Melvina Carpenter-72952. We know our Amanda did not die in 1864 in Pa.
Charles Hutson is in the process of sorting out George Washington Carpenter and his wife Harriet Brewster Carpenter of the Mayflower Brewsters. They are Buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. There is a Higbie Carpenter buried there as well and an elderly woman by the name of Abby Carpenter that was born in Pa.
We are not positive yet that George W. Carpenter and Higbie Carpenter are Amanda’s brothers or Cousins.

BIRTH: estimated to be about 21 Aug 1829 per death certificate - See PDF image: RIN 72952 Amanda M Carpenter Hutson DEATH.pdf
PARENT:  Asahel Carpenter-6984 and Amanda M. Thayer has been disproved as parents. Confirmed parents are: John Carpenter and Mary Mayo.  See below.

We know from Amanda Carpenter Hutson’s death certificate that her parent’s names were John Carpenter and Mary Mayo. Family records put the wedding of Robert Hutson to Amanda Melvina Carpenter on 21 August 1848 in New York City.
The wedding notice of Robert Hutson and Amanda’s daughter Minnie refers to George Carpenter and his children. Census records confirm the children to this George Carpenter. He is buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery with his brother Higbie, who’s obituary has him laid out at his brother George’s residence in New York City.
Abby Carpenter is buried with George and Higbie Carpenter. Her birth place was in New Jersey/Pennsylvania area in 1786. We believe she is Henry’s wife, John Carpenter’s brother. His death record mentions a wife, Abigail http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=recordimage&c=fs:1680846&r=r_656476986&pn=p1
Abby’s middle initial was K from the cemetery records – do not know what it means.
Census records for Amanda, George and Higbie put their mother’s birth place as Connecticut and their father’s birth place as Long Island.
We tied Higbie to his grandmother’s maiden name. This is what we believe linked all the pieces together, Henry & Abigail – Abby & Higbie - George & Higbie - George and Amanda. Amanda to her father John - Henry to his father Daniel – Daniel to his son John.
If you have a fax # I can fax the family genealogy tree.

From family records, Amanda Carpenter was born August 21, 1829 and was married on her 18th birthday to Robert Hutson in 1848. George W. Carpenter, from census records, was born about 1822. He died December 14th 1891 in Brooklyn. We will confirm his birth date from his death certificate in a few weeks.
We know that George W. Carpenter’s only living son, Howard S. Carpenter had two sons; Howard M. born in June of 1879 and Percy Brewster Carpenter, born March 31, 1889.
From George W. Carpenter’s census records, his father (John) was born in Long Island, and his mother was born in Connecticut. We so far assume that George’s mother is also Mary Mayo.
In 1848 Robert Huston (Amanda’s husband) went into business with his brother George, painting and refurbishing ships. I wonder if this has something to do with John Carpenter’s business building ships. Robert’s grandfather was Peter Fenton who owned a lumber and cooperage firm on Vesey Street in New York City.
We are trying to establish DAR Connections through Robert Hutson, but cannot tie him directly with his father George Hutson, his parent’s are not mentioned on Robert’s death certificate. We also do not know when or where Robert’s father George Hutson died, and his grandmother Rachel as well. Both disappeared out of the New York City directories in the early 1830’s. These two relatives are our missing links. We know who they were but do not know where they ended up.
We have two DAR connections, John Hutson and Peter Fenton, but cannot do anything without a positive link up of George Hutson, Robert’s father and John’s son. The same is true of Peter Fenton’s daughter Susannah, Robert’s mother.
We cannot find the birth or baptism of Robert Hutson to prove this linkage.

We will know more when we have George W. Carpenter’s death certificate to see what is listed for his parents. In his plot in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn is an Anna E. Calhoun who was buried in 1936 an born around 1840. We will see what it says on her death certificate as well.
We also know that Amanda’s mother attended Amanda’s daughter’s wedding in 1887 as it was mentioned in the Wedding Notice in the Brooklyn Eagle; it only mentions grandmother of the bride and not her name.
A few of my wife’s family is working on this, Charles Hutson in Oregon, Barbara Kurnzi, and Diana Schinnerer. Diana is an editor with CNN and has access to a wealth of info.
