POSSIBLE SECOND MARRIAGE: "Marion County, West Virginia Marriages; 1863-1900"; Ancestry.com: "Oiven McNamorron to Clarrissa Jane Carpenter 10 Nov 1893, Marion, WV."  QUESTION: Could that be Oliver?  Ann McKy, mariahmcky@hotmail.com, wrote on 5 Oct 2001: "Hi Jan, I have looked under Mcnamorron in my Marion Cty Marriages which go through 1899 and I see no Clarissa Mcnamorron listed which tells me that she was not remarried at that time or she was overlooked by the author. I saw her listed as Clarissa Carpenter when she married Mundel and I would assume she would be listed as Clarissa McNamorron when and if she got married prior to 1900 census. If he were dead, she was only 55 years old in 1900 and it  would be likely she would get married again. Regardless, she would not have any children so it will not be a problem. My opinion, for what its worth, is that it is highly unlikely that this is "our" Clarissa.  NOTE: A Clarissa Vincent married James T. Hawkins on 11 June 1876 in Marion County, also.

8362. David Carpenter

PARENTS-SIBLINGS-SPOUSES-CHILDREN: "History of Marion County, WV"; 1985; FHL 975.454 H2h, Q Area, page 119 submitted by Sherry Carpenter Heston: "David married Pathena Phillips.  They were the parents of Albert, Rebecca and Amos. David's second wife was Martha Jane Keener.  They were the parents of Pathena, David, George, John, Sarah, Emma, Lewis, James, and Elmer."  See M-24 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, Colorado.

FIRST MARRIAGE: "Marion County WV Marriages, 1842-1899"; SLC FHL 975.454 V2m, page 25: "Carpenter, David, 22, Monongalia; Phillips, 'Leveaht' (?), 22, Monongalia; Ashman and 'Amy'; Acton and Rebecca; Nov 26, 1855.  See IV, 44a. FHL Film 464957, Marion County Marriages 1842-1865 appeared to read "Abraham and Emily Carpenter."  The remaining information was the same.  See I, 111.

FIRST SPOUSE: Ancestral File, 1993 Edition.  Information submitted by Gretna Raydene Williams reported that David Carpenter, son of Ashman Carpenter and Emily Martin, and born in 1833 in Marion Co., WV, married Parthena Phillips, born about 1835 and were parents of Jacob B., born about 1856; Amos 'Hoffmon', born 1 Nov 1858; Albert M., born about 1860 and Rabecca (Kenner) Carpenter, born about 1862.  His second wife was given as Martha 'Kenner' born about 1833.
See C-3, #6.

SECOND MARRIAGE: "Taylor County WV Marriages; 1853-1905; FHL 975.455 V28c; Feb 1987; page 34:  Carpenter, David, 30 (W), Richland Co., Ohio, Marion County and Keener, Martha J., 19, Taylor County; s/o (son of) Ashman and Emily; 23 Feb 1865."  Thus, his year of birth was likely 1834 or 1835.

SECOND MARRIAGE:  "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, chapter entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," page 2, prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee.  "David Carpenter, born c1834, married Martha J. Keener on 23 Feb 1865 in Taylor Cny WV."

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES-MILITARY-DEATH: On April 29, 2002 descendant Gary Baker, garyb@strategic.com, sent a Carpenter Family History written in 1984 by an unknown author, possibly Carl Carpenter:  "On April 9, 1865 in Grafton, West Virginia, David Carpenter was drafted into Company E of the Seventh Regiment of the West Virginia Infantry volunteers.  David was 29 years old, had fair complexion, dark hair, blue eyes and was a stout man for his 130 pound frame.  A month later the company was repositioned to Washington, D. C.  In June following the surrender of the South by General Robert E. Lee, the company participated in a victory march through Virginia which started in Burkeville Junction and passed through Richmond en route to Munson Hill.  The march was a long, hard, grueling activity that was injurious to the health of many men.  David Carpenter was completely disabled upon arriving at Munson Hill.  David was hospitalized for a severe case of varicose veins in his right leg and chronic dysentery.  Following brief medical care, David was discharged on July 1, 1865 from the Army.  The ailments incurred during the march handicapped David Carpenter throughout the rest of his life.  The eight dollar per month pension was little compensation for the ailments which prevented David from living a productive life.  On September 28, 1898 David died of the non-combat injuries suffered during his eighty-two days of duty in the Army.  At the time of his death, David was survived by his second wife Martha J. (Keener) and their children, Pathina, David, George, John, Sarah, Emma, Louis, James and Elemore. David's first wife, Pathenia (Phillips), died in 1864 and three of their four children were alive at the time of David's death.  They were Jacob, Amos and Rebecca.  One son, Albert,
was killed one year earlier in a train accident."

MILITARY: David served in the Civil War in the Union Army, Company E. Information from Robert Hershman via GEDCOM/e-mail, 17 Apr 1998. Patty Carpenter Helms wrote via e-mail on June 3, 1998 that "David Carpenter" was the only name listed on his dischage papers in 1865 from the Civil War.  At that time he was 29 years old and reported he was born in Richland County, Ohio.  (See above notes re: "David Ashman Carpenter."

SPOUSE-CHILDREN: Ancestral File, 1993 Edition.
