in Germany in 1847.  He was a Civil War Veteran who lost an am in combat.

1852 - Samuel immigrated to the US in 1852.

1860 Cuyahoga Co OH census, listed at home with Caleb Carpenter and family.

1861-1865, Samuel served in the Civil War in Co A, 124th Ohio Volunteer Infantry,
where he lost an arm.  I have a picture of Samuel A Carpenter from a Cuyahoga Co
History Book, date of book not known.  He is shown wearing his civil war uniform.
Caption: "Shown in May 1862 as a 16-year-old Civil War soldier, Samuel A Carpenter
later lost his right arm in battle while fighting for the Union army.  He was the last
surviving Strongsville veteran of the Civil War at the time of his death in 1928 at age
82."

Samuel was a farmer.

1868 - Samuel A Carpenter married Mary Woodard about 1868.  Where were they
married, there is no record in Cuyahoga Co OH marriage records.  (There is a record
for Samuel C or Samuel S Carpenter and Rena L Avery, 7 May 1868, Cuyahoga Co
OH.  Married by A W Knowlton, M G.  Samuel is listed as Samuel S Carpenter on the
marriage record and Samuel C Carpenter on the index at the edge.  This is the same
minister that married his adopted siblings.  Could this be a first marriage for Samuel?)

1880 - Samuel had a step-son named Elmer Deanford who was 17 in 1880, making
his date of birth about 1863.  I don't know where he fits in.
