Dear John,
"My" Horace is listed in the 1850 census for the town of Rochester, County of Racine, Wisconsin as
being 57, which would make a birth about 1793 or so.  He was married to Maria Abigail Lockwood,
widow (maiden name Loomis), and she is listed as 40 in that census.
There is a church record from New York state that lists another marriage for him about 3 years before
it lists the one to Maria, but I don't think it was Betsey Lawrence.  Do you have any suggestions how I
can check further whether this Horace ,that you write about could be the right one, or where I can
go from here?  Thank you for your response and your help.
Sincerely yours, Ruth Catton
MORE: Continued from another e-mail:
I am looking for more information on Horace Carpenter, born in New Hampshire (?Hanover),
married "Mrs. Maria Lockwood" Whitehall, NY, August 20, 1833.  They are found in Rochester,
Racine County, Wisconsin in the 1850 census, with 6 children.
William age 14, born in New York;  (SEE: A Below)
Isaac age 12, born in Ohio (where?); Franklin age 10, born in Ohio,
Edward (my Gt.Gt.Grandfather,
Edward Parker Carpenter), age 6, born in Ohio;Charles age 3, born in
Wisconsin; and Sabrina
Lockwood age 19, and born in New York (probably Maria's daughter by her
first husband).
Maria is sometimes referred to as Maria Abigail, sometimes Abigail Maria.
If anybody has information about Horace's parents, siblings, or more
information about his
children I would welcome it.  Edward died in 1870 just before the birth
of his only child, my
Grandmother.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

From: Ruth Catton  ebrwcatton
Dear John:
Thank you for your letters re Horace.
I think the Horace born in Hanover to Ezra and Anne Fuller probably is
"my" Horace.  He is listed in Amos Carpenter "A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the
Carpenter Family in America" as #5759.  There he is listed as having married Betsey Lawrence
and Residence, Racine Wisconsin.  The next offspring in that family (Ezra and Anne Fuller) was
Belary, listed as marrying Augustine Lockwood, Residence, Clintonville, N.Y.  The father, Ezra, is
listed as having died in Whitehall, N.Y. in 1812, age 55.
Sleeper News printed a copy of "An Ecclesiastical Book" in 2 sections -
November, 1994 and February 1995, the book belonging to the First Presbyterian Church, of Whitehall,
N.Y., and containing marriages.  In the November issue it shows:  "Augustus Lockwood to
Belora Carpenter, Oct. 26, 1824 (Augustin Lockwood died July 23, 1832, aged 30.  William St.
Cemetery).   Could this be Augustine and Belary?
Further on, it shows:"Mr. Clark Lockwood to (illegible), Dec.31, 1827.      Clark Lockwood was the
first husband of Maria Abigail Loomis, who later married Horace Carpenter, and according to my
Gt.Grandmother's notes he and Horace had worked together with a canal boat company in Whitehall,
and Horace and Maria (or Abigail) named their first child Clark Lockwood Carpenter.
In the February, 1995 issue it shows:  Mr. Horace Carpenter to Elenour Bostwick, Whitehall, 27th Sept.,
1830."  And further on:  "Horace Carpenter to Mrs. Maria Lockwood, Whitehall, August 20,1833.  (Evidently
his first wife did not live long.  See page 124)". It would be interesting to see the actual book, to know
whether the handwriting was the same for the whole entry, or who put in the comment about the first wife.
The notes from Gt.Grandmother give those 2 dates (Dec. 31, 1827 and Aug. 20, 1833) for the 2 marriages
of Maria Abigail Loomis (sometimes she is called Abigail Maria).  She lists 2 children from the first
marriage:  George Wallis Lockwood, and Sabrina Amanda Lockwood.
Sabrina is listed in the 1850 census with Horace, et. al, in Wisconsin, but not in the 1860 census
(probably married by then?)
There were 6 children listed in the second marriage:  Clark Lockwood
Carpenter, William Loomis Carpenter (SEE: A BELOW),
Isaac D. Carpenter (SEE: A BELOW), Franklin Carpenter, Edward Parker Carpenter (my
GtGrandfather),and Charles Carpenter.
In the 1850 census, Wm. is listed as born in NY (Clark is not listed),
the next 4 born in Ohio, and Charles in Wisconsin.
I have pictures of Horace and Maria Abigail, of Sabrina Lockwood Rouse
and Frank Rouse, of Charles Carpenter, of Clark Carpenter (? the first Carpenter child) and Mrs. Clark
Carpenter with child.  Also of a George Carpenter, Adelaide Carpenter, and a William Carpenter, as well as of Edward P. Carpenter (he died just before their one and only child was born.)
Unfortunately most of the births and deaths I am searching for, occurred before official county and state
records were kept, so it is only if I can track down the church, cemetery, etc. involved.
I have not come up with any other references to the Betsey Lawrence mentioned in Amos Carpenter's book, nor
the Elenour Bostwick mentioned in the article in Sleeper News.
I plan to search 1840 census in Ohio, as there are 2 listings of Horace Carpenter that would be possible.  And there
is one other Horace Carpenter listed in the Wisconsin 1860 census, which I will check for wife's name.
I haven't checked out a Family History Center  yet - the nearest one has rather irregular hours, and I don't know
how much they have, or whether most would have to be requested from Salt Lake City.  The bigger ones are
quite a distance to travel in the wintry weather, so I may wait and check one of them in the spring.
Thank you again for your help and suggestions.  I hope my information has perhaps filled in a couple spots for your records. Sincerely, Ruth Catton.

Hi John,  Thanks for the info--Ruth Catton and I have already found & helped each other.  Yes, it is the same Horace for us both.  We are both stuck on Horace's birth  and parentage in New Hampshire or thereabouts,  maybe Canada, circa 1803. Would you like  information from me on my branch (descended from his son Isaac), or do you have what you would want already?
Do you still have the Carpenter CDs for sale, and if so how do I get one?  Or is there a new one  in the works?  Of course, if it turns out that we are not related to any known branch it may not matter...   It will be interesting to see the results of the DNA test.  I can't wait to receive it and go see my uncle.          Pam Berger
