I am trying to trace my great grandfather's family line and fear I have reached one of those bumps in the road where one needs "new eyes" to find one's way.  Before joining this list, I read through the archives looking for any postings that might connect to my known ancestors, but there seemed to be nothing.  I was impressed with the scholarship (and sense of humor) evident in the postings!  Hope someone can point me in the right direction.
The following information was culled from Amos's death record, his marriage registration and the birth registration for his daughter, my grandmother:
Amos F (Frank) Carpenter, born 31 July 1869, birth place listed only as Canada.
    Father:  Amos W (William) Carpenter
    Mother:  Helen
    Entered US: (1878)
Married:  6 Nov 1889  Carrie Lee Churchill of Abington MA;  Amos is listed as living in Whitman MA, occupation shoemaker.
My grandmother's birth was recorded in Cranston RI in 1898;  Amos's occupation is listed as machinist
Death:  23 February 1943 East Providence, RI;  record indicated he had lived in East Providence for 3 yrs. prior to his death;  Amos is buried in Springvale Cemetery in Rumford, East Providence, RI  (Lakeside Cemetery Association).
I have consulted A Carpenter Memorial;  however, other than a coincidence of name (Amos) and location (Canada) there was nothing to connect my two Amoses to any families represented.  I would appreciated any input.
Marcia.

Dear John,
This is not a query, but, instead, a great big THANK YOU!  You have done such a wonderful thing
by making available to so many people all the Carpenter information that you have compiled.  I
started looking for the origins of my great grandfather, Amos Carpenter about two years ago.  All I
knew about him was the date he died, the name of his wife and that he came from Canada.  Once I
learned a little bit more about him, I began to post queries to the message boards.  You responded
to those queries and the information that you sent me on 18 Feb 2001 has proven to be most helpful.
My Amos Frank Carpenter was born 31 July 1869 in Durham, Drummond Co., Quebec, the son of
Amos W. and Helen (Yates) Carpenter.  I have searched through countless records trying to identify
Amos W, the father of Amos Frank.  I eliminated a couple of Amos (son) and Amos (father) leads
that I received.  One of the records that I obtained was a 1901 Canadian Immigrant Census Record
for an Amos Carpenter, born 6 March 1836, place United States, year of immigration to Canada
1838; also in household was wife Eleanor, age 66, son Edward, age 39, and Lucy, no relationship
given, age 12;  This information, in some ways fit the profile I had of the father of Amos Frank,
based on what I knew; some instinct told me this was the father of my Amos, but I had no proof.
Last evening, I received a message from Penny Carpenter, a Canadian researcher, responding to
one of my queries about "Canadian Carpenters".  She was doing research on another family in
Durham (not Carpenters) and took the time to see if she could find any information for me.  What an
act of genealogical kindness!  This is what she sent:
Carpenter, Clarissa Isabelle born to Amos and Helen (Nellie) B. Carpenter 3 Dec 1859; chr. Jan
1860 Durham Congregational Church
Amos Wright Carpenter died 3 June 1902, aged 66 yrs
Nellie Yates Carpenter, wife of Amos, died 30 Mar 1905, aged 70 yrs
Source was Durham Congregational Church Records 1835-1918
This Amos Carpenter and wife Helen (Nellie) of Durham appear to be the same as the Amos and
wife Eleanor (interpreted from Nellie?) with son Edward and child Lucy in the 1901 census.
While I have no proof at this time, the circumstantial evidence suggests that Amos Wright Carpenter
b 1836 is the son of Harry and Esther (Wright) Carpenter-42346, born probably in Vermont.
When I received the information from Penny last night, everything just clicked with the information
you had sent me several months ago.  I am so grateful to you, because you took the time to answer
my query all those months ago.  You just never know when all the pieces will fall into place.
If I haven't already bored you to tears, I would like to add one ironic twist to this story.  While I
don't know the exact circumstances, Amos appears to have come to the States as a young boy,
perhaps about 8-10 yrs of age.  At the time of his marriage in Abington MA in 1889, he was
working in a shoe factory.  Shortly after his marriage, Amos relocated to Cranston RI, where he
found work as a machinist.  That is where he raised his family.  Later in life, Amos and his wife
separated, although they never divorced.  Amos lived with his daughter and her family-that would be
my grandmother, her husband and their two daughters- in East Providence RI.  When Amos died in
1943, my grandfather purchased a single cemetery plot in the nearest cemetery.  That cemetery is
Springvale Cemetery in Rumford RI, next to the Newman Congregational Church.  Although his
route was circuitous and his lineage unknown, Amos's final resting place is with his ancestors.
Thank you again, John.

QUESTION:
"One of the records that I obtained was a 1901 Canadian Immigrant Census Record for an Amos Carpenter, born 6 March 1836, place United States, year of immigration to Canada 1838; also in household was wife Eleanor, age 66, son Edward, age 39, and Lucy, no relationship given, age 12; ..."
In 1838 Amos was age 2.  Also in household was Eleanor (a wife), age 66. Was Eleanor born in 1772, ie age 66 in 1838?  Was Edward her son born 1799, ie age 39 in 1838?  Was Lucy born 1826, ie age 12 in 1838?
Was Amos a grandchild being brought in by his grandmother?  Was Eleanor a Carpenter? Was Edward the father of Amos? Was Edward the father of Lucy?
