14113. John Copeland Carpenter
#289-4 in the T. Carpenter book.
The first saw mill built at Marilla Village by the GATES brothers passed to a
JAMES CLARK then to this JOHN CARPENTER. Later, it was converted to a cheese
factory. JOHN built a grist mill in 1858 in company with H.T. FOSTER and FRANK
CHESBRO. After several owners, the mill burned. JOHN was mentioned in his
father's will, dated May 26, 1882, as of then being of Marilla. He and his
brother LEWIS were named executors. Gravestones were in good condition in
1974.Number 96-3 in the Timothy Carpenter book.
GEORGE and his brother JEREMIAH purchased from BENJAMIN WOOSLEY POPE of New
York City for $500.00 a 100-acre tract in Lot 125, Twp. 10, 5th Range on Oct.
27, 1825; this sale was recorded Sept. 26, 1832. GEORGE had 70 acres of this
tract and began construction of a log cabin. In 1827, the two brothers
purchased another tract on the Four Rod Road, east of the site of Marilla, and
JEREMIAH began raising a log cabin. On June 9, 1832, George and his wife ANNE
conveyed to brother JEREMIAH of the ALden area, 100 acres for $600.00 in the
undivided half of Buffalo Run, Lot 138, Twp. 10, 5th Range, as recorded Sept.
26, 1832. In 1842, GEORGE built a house; the same year he devised a piece of
land for the Evergreen Cemetery in Marilla. His son, GLEASON, was the first
offical interment in this new section. GEORGE'S father had been interred in a
private burial site on this ground prior to its becoming a cemetery.
GEORGE'S will, dated May 26, 1882, named sons LEWIS and JOHN executors, but son
LEWIS petitioned and was granted the post of estate administrator. The
following were mentioned in the will: Spouse, MEHITABEL; sons LEWIS and JOHN
of Marilla; son GEORGE of Watertown, State of Dakota; son CHARLES of Dakota;
son SQUIRE of Cresco, IA, and daughter LYDIA of Marilla. All were over age
21. ALSO MENTIONED granddaughter OSCEOLA ADAM of Marilla and grandsons FRANK
S. and CHARLES L. gravestones were in good condition in 1974; There is a name
only on MEHITABEL'S stone.CENSUS: 1850 US Census - See image: RIN 1770 George W Carpenter 1850b.jpg
Living next door to father.
In 1850 US Census.
14115. Glezen Fillmore Carpenter
#291-4 of the T. Carpenter book. GLEZEN sometimes written as GLEAZEN or
GLEASON was the first official interment in Evergreen Cemetery after his father
dedicated the land to the community for the cemetery. Had at least one child.
#292-4 in the T. Carpenter book. LEWIS was married three times and had issue
with all three. LEWIS and his brother JOHN were named executors of their
father's will dated 5-26-1882. LEWIS petitioned to act as administrator. Each
spouse has an individual gravestone; these stones were in good condition in
1974.A pattern of the deaths of the first two wives suggest that either LEWIS
divorced JANET WILDER (died 1863) or LEWIS was a practicing Mormon,
concidering that his second spouse, LORAINE died in 1862. Regardless of the
situation, each was given honored status in death.
EMELINE was known as "EMILY".
#294-4 in the T. Carpenter book. LYDIA married twice having at least two
children.
MARY moved to Buffalo, N.Y.

Hi John,
In Aug one Sandra Yorkell-Parker and yourself had a short memo between you regarding my interest in my CARPENTER family research. So I am entering into that memo and introducing myself and my family to you. I am Evelyn Carpenter Small-Wellman and live in Spokane Wa on the east side of Washington state where we have mountains and lakes, snow in the winter and drier, hotter summers than Seattle area.
My CARPENTER trail hits a brick wall at the birth of our (1) Civil War Vet in 1827 Orange Co NY (possibly Cornwall). (2)Born SAMUEL TOWNSEND CARPENTER to (4)Lucy(6) MARIA DENNISTON and ? CARPENTER. He had a younger sister (5)ANN ELIZA CARPENTER who married JAMES S CAMPBELL, moved to Milwaukee WI and owned a 'yankee notions' store (quote). They had no children and I don't know where they were buried.
The next primary document I have on (4)SAMUEL TOWNSEND is his marriage in 1853 St Joseph MO(3) to (4) PHOEBE ELLEN(DER) BROWN (born in Greenville TN).
I have more info, but so I'm not boring you by too much at first I'll just site sources now
1. National Archives military records (100 pgs)
2. Tombstone in Doniphan Co KS
3. Marriage certificate
4. Land records and deeds
5. Federal and state of MO census records
6. Will of MARIA's second husband BENJAMIN MEAD of Blooming Grove, NY
7. Buchanan CO MO History
If you are interested and would like some more info please respond at your convenience
Sincerely Evelyn
