Thank you for your response, John. I came across the Carpenter website after
having become the family archivist when my mother moved and could no longer
house the genealogical information she and my father had accumulated, but
never organized. I noted in the Carpenter website that Increase Carpenter
(77) is shown as having married Charity and their children are listed but you
or whoever maintains that website might want to fill this in: Increase's
dates are 1808-18881. His wife was Charity Ann Hendrickson,
12/3/1807-5/7/1888, and they were married 1/21/1829. Date of marriage and
the bride's full name are taken from the marriage announcement in the "Long
Island Farmer" and from information in the Jamaica Collection, Long Island
Room, Jamaica Library. Among their children was Hannah A., 8/1/1843, my
great-grandmother. She married Peter Van Siclen, 1/19/1833-3/9/1900 and they
had three children: George Edgar, my grandfather, and his twin brother,
James, born 12/20/1863; and Clarence Eugene, 7/20/1873.
George Edgar married, first, Cornelia Remsen Ryersen on 11/14/1888. Her
dates are 2/17/1865-4/3/1891 and she died young from tuberculosis and without
children. His second wife was Abbier Baxter Fredericks, married 10/31/1894.
Her dates are 1/6/1873-1/20/1968. She was my grandmother. Their children
are: 1) James Remsen Van Siclen, 9/29/1895-5/25/1987. He married Edna Helen
Nesbitt, 8/11/1897-6/3/1975 on 10/6/1920. They had two children, Laura
Nesbitt Van Siclen, 5/11/1922, now deceased, don't have date of death, never
married, no children; and James Remsen Van Siclen, Jr., 6/4/1930-1963, never
married, no children; 2) Mabel Estelle, 1/20/1898-7/30/1898; 3) Clinton
Eugene, 7/8/1899-7/16/1972, never married, no children; 4) George Herbert,
1/8/1901-5/6/1976. Married to Marjorie Harned, 8/11/1903-7/14/1986. They
had one son, Peter Fredericks Van Siclen, 6/16/1944. Peter has been married
twice, has children but I don't know how many and lives in West Virginia. 5)
Edna May, 11/16/1903-3/21/1904; 6) Howard Edgar, 2/7/1906-now deceased, don't
have date of death. On 6/17/30, he married Edith Engel, 2/3/1906, who died
in 1998, I believe. They had two children, Howard, Jr., who married Betsy
(?) and had four sons, one of whom, William, died at the age of seven. Their
remaining sons are married and have children; and Barbara, who married George
Zorn and they have children, but I don't know how many. 7)Abbie Baxter Van
Siclen, 2/19/1917-present, married Robert Frederick Peterson,
5/2/1916-12/18/1997 on 10/18/1939. They have four children; a) Abigail
Janet, 8/6/1941-, married 5/26/73 to Thomas Anthony Reilly, 6/30/1943, one
daughter, Katherine Abigail Baxter Reilly, 8/28/76; b) Deborah Ann,
6/21/1944, married on 6/10/1967 to Robert R. Tight, 6/4/1941, three sons:
Stephen Andrew, 1/25/1971, married 10/4/1997 to Jennifer J. Gibson; Daniel
Gregory, 6/7/1972, married 5/22/2000 to Leah Reddy; Thomas Robert,
10/11/1974. c) Meredith Sue, 3/21/1950, married 8/20/1977 to Robert D. Tufts,
Jr., 4/27/1949, three children, Elizabeth Alice Fredericks, 3/6/85; Andrew
Griffin and David Cameron, twins, born 7/7/1987; d) Robert Andrew, 2/14/1952,
married 8/19/1984 to Katherine Lo, 1/28/1958. Their children are Anne Lo
Peterson, 2/5/1989 and Ross Lo Peterson, 10/8/1992. Hope this is useful as
yet another "twig" on the seemingly immense Carpenter tree.

John, missing from the Increase and Charity Carpenter children is Amanda
Carpenter, Hannah's sister, whom my mother remembers as always being referred
to as "Aunt Amanda Carpenter," and my mother knew she was her great-aunt.
She did not marry and had no children. She died in 1929. I have the final
settlement account for her estate, as well as her hand-written note as to
what was to be done with her final remains. Don't have a date of birth.

Finally dug out my notes on Gregory vs McGregory. A cousin has a copy of James Asa Carpenter's death cert which says his mother was "____________ Gregory" (no Mc). I've seen it, but she never sent me the copy she promised. This same cousin has been working with a Gregory researcher and got a file which is pretty well documented. It has a Phebe Gregory b. 17 Oct 1795 to Joseph and Sarah (Thorn) Gregory. A 1793 sibling is shown as born in Warren County, NY (this is Bolton/Bolton Landing's county). A 1799 sibling married a Warren County lassie and had all his issue in Warren County. A Phebe Carpenter, 54, died 2 May 1849 per Brownville, Jefferson, NY vitals. This has her born about 1795.
Asa Carpenter (Phebe's spouse) was injured when his musket blew up in his face. He went to a hospital in VT. The War Dept letter which apparently is the source of the "Mc" describes this and gives his date of release. The timing fits with a guy who leaves the hospital, goes around Lake Champaign to Bolton Landing, marries his childhood sweetheart, and heads on to Jefferson County where his father is.
Sorry about the delay. Have a happy holiday.
