There is little known about the artist, Lewis J. Carpenter. It is believed he was a member of the Peconic Bay Impressionists, having studied with either Joseph Beckwith Hartranft or Rachel Beebe.
A dentist and later an undertaker.

He attended Brown U., with a BA in 1866, PHD. He resided at Thistle Cottage, 71, Central Ave., Milton, MA for many years.
