26821. Glenn J. Carpenter

WHERE-A-BOUTS UNKNOWN.  MISSING SINCE 1940.
BIRTH: 10 Nov 1916/1917. However ... The SSN DEATH INDEX has:
GLEN CARPENTER born: 11 Nov 1917 death: Jun 1980 49868 (Newberry, Luce, MI)
(none specified) SSN: 379-10-7339 Michigan.
I sent for the social security application and it has the following data:
Glen J.(just initial per handwritten note) Carpenter dated April 13, 1937.
He lists his birth as 11 Nov 1917 and birth location as Lapeer Lapeer County
Michigan. He lists his age as 19. Sex as Male and Color as white.
His father is listed as: Louis Carpenter. His mother as: Ella Meseraull.
(PLEASE NOTE THE MOTHER NAME DIFFERENCE!)
Residence Street & Number is listed as: George McPherson and Newberry,
Michigan.  Business name of present employer: Frank Carrathess.
Business Address: Seney Michigan.
NAME:  Glen or Glenn

Note:  "Mother" may have been his wife ...
Example:
Elva MESERAULL
   Birth Date: 27 Jun 1915
   Death Date: 4 Jun 2002
   Social Security Number:  365-44-0385
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued:  Michigan
   Death Residence Localities
   ZIP Code: 99324
Localities:  College Place, Walla Walla, Washington

Further research indicates that Ella or Elva Meseraull was probably his wife. She was probably
born 27 Jun 1915 MI.  Her father's name was Glenn. A Glenn A. Meseraull was listed in the
1910 Census for MI.  Glenn is listed in Northville in Wayne county, MI.
It appears that they divorced and I have found no known offspring.  Glen stayed mostly in MI and Ella or Elva apparently took her maiden name and moved to WA state.

STORY:
My grandmother, Frances Caroline Rosenkrans was born on 21 Feb 1900 in Henryville, Lawrence, TN. She died on 31 Aug 1993 in Billings, Yellowstone, MT.

Frances had seven children of which only five would survive childhood from her first marriage with Charles Samuel Fisher. They were married on 6 Sep 1917 in Dickinson, Stark, ND and on 14 Feb 1928 Charles was killed while loading frozen coal into a tender car that rode behind the locomotive steam railroad engine.  Frances would marry again on 21 Mar 1930 in Fargo, Cass, ND to Louis Jonathan Carpenter, my grandfather.  During the depression, times were tough, full time jobs were rare and money short.

Just before World War II, Frances Carpenter was a school teacher in Fargo, Cass, ND.  Her second husband, Louis Carpenter, worked on the railroad as a cook. She had two children, Richard (my father) and Robert with Louis.

In 1940, Louis Carpenter brought back word that the Kaiser Shipyards were training and hiring workers to make ships. He had been in Portland and brought back papers for her to read to him the requirements to him. Louis had not been a good student and had dropped out early to work.  His reading skills were skimpy at best.

The Kaiser Shipyards were seven major shipbuilding yards located mostly on the U.S. west coast during World War II. They were owned by the Kaiser Shipbuilding Company, a creation of American industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, who established the shipbuilding company around 1939 in order to help meet the construction goals set by the United States Maritime Commission for merchant shipping. See:

The Carpenters rode the train to Portland, Oregon in the summer of 1940 and stayed with relatives while Louis and Frances went to school learning how to be welders.  Frances was one of the first female welders to complete the welders class. She and two other women had been told that if they passed the class, Henry Kaiser would hire them. Frances had a knack for straight welding without pockets and was valued for this. She had to endure many incidents of harassment from the men.  Her husband Louis, was involved in several fights because he was pressured to make her quit.  Both passed the class, but Frances was a much better welder than her husband.

Louis and Frances started at Ryan Point in Vancouver, Washington part of the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation then run by the Kaiser Shipyards. Each day they rode the Portland City bus to a Kaiser Worker pickup point. There they rode the Kaiser bus to work.  They carried their own lunch and provided their own clothing.  Kaiser issued gloves, apron and a welders helmet to them which stayed at work. Because they lived away from the Company town, they saved money and paid rent to their relatives.

When the war started many men went into the military and women were encouraged to replace them at jobs normally held by women.  As the number of ship workers fell the demand went up.  Classes in welding and hot riveting were held twice a day then later three times a day and more than half of the students were female and many were from other minorities. Frances quickly became a lead welder.

Frances was asked to visit some of the schools to encourage and report back what was going on.  Because of the demand, an emergency shipyard was thrown together in the St. Johns area of Portland, Oregon for the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation.  This was a rough and tumble job site without the normal buildings for gear and supplies.  Tents were put up and later buildings replaced tents. Frances was sent there as a lead welder and as a example for other women.

Different ships needed different quality welding.  Liberty ships were not expected to be attacked and were made as fast as possible and with more hot rivets than welding.  There was a great need for small aircraft carriers called the Casablanca-class escort carriers. These jeep (a nickname) carriers needed to be completed quickly and the quality and number of welds needed were much higher per each section.  So Frances went back across the river with the best female welders to work on the jeep carriers.

On April 5, 1943, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt (Her first name was Eleanor) toured the facility and was introduced to Mrs. Frances Carpenter, a shipyard welder.  They chatted for about ten minutes and Frances went back to work but not before a picture was taken. The picture made the local newspaper and it was seen by her relatives and clipped out for her.

Sadly, Frances’ marriage to Louis Carpenter did not survive.  Either an injury or fight combined with alcohol caused Louis to leave the shipyard.  And he left town. Frances continued to work as a welder until late 1944 when the emergency shipyards began to close.  Some workers were transferred and some were let go.  At this time Frances was plagued by repeated small injuries and her back was hurting her constantly. She decided to quit work.

About this time, Frances received a telegram from the War Department that her son Private Charles Stanley Fisher (from her first marriage) was missing in action during the German attack on American forces in the Ardennes during what would be called the Battle of the Bulge.  It would not be until the end of January 1945 that she would be notified that he had been severely wounded and evacuated to a hospital near Paris. He would live. Another son from her first marriage, Billy Irwin Fisher fought in the Pacific and came home without any physical injuries. Two of her daughter’s husbands (from her first husband) also served in the military during the war.

By this time period Frances was plagued by repeated small injuries and her back was hurting her constantly.  She moved back to North Dakota in 1945 where her divorce to Louis Carpenter was finalized.  On 12 Apr 1945 President Franklin D. Roosevelt died and Frances wrote a note to Eleanor Roosevelt offering her condolences. She was one of some 35,000 women who wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt.

During a Lutheran Church dance in Dickenson, Stark, ND, she met an older widower farmer named John Alfred Braaten. On a date, on 8 May 1945 they heard that the war in Europe was over. They married in Dickinson on 21 June 1945.

John & Frances were listening on a radio powered by a battery charged by a windmill generator – no electricity on the farm – when they heard the announcement that Japan had surrendered on 14 Aug 1945.
