1485. Samuel Carpenter

Samuel came to Saltfleet Twp. in 1787.  He was married several times.
Submitted by Donald W. Carpenter (born 28 Apr. 1943) of Ontario,
Canada.
This Samuel is believed to be the Samuel Carpenter who is mentioned in the
"Death Notices from Christian Guardian" 1836-1850, Pages 57-58 which reads:
"Carpenter, Samuel was born in Sussex Co., N.J., c. 1776, and emigrated to
Canada West, settling in Saltfleet Twp. in 1787.  In about 1801 he married
Mary Templer of Grimsby who die in 1838.  In 1839, he married Mrs. Simonds of
Flamboro West.  He died, Sept. 12, 1845; survived by his wife and family. -
Dec. 17, 1845, p. 33,0."

In one record he has a daughter Sally who married a McMullen.
This may be a nick name for Martha, Mercy or Sarah.  But to play it safe, she
is listed as a daughter.

Mary Templer

NAME: Temple or Templer.

3854. Sally Carpenter

See father's notes.

1486. Phoebe or Phebe Carpenter

Phoebe had five children.  Only one lived past childhood, Mary.
Phoebe may have had a sister named Phebe who died in infantcy.

The above was taken from some old writings of Stephen Coon 1826-1891.
Stephen's son Burwell has added to it as has George Rancier Wilfred
Coon.  As you read some of the writings about George Rancier Coon born
1799 it says that he was sent to live with relatives after the death of
his father.  Am still waiting on some info from some descendants in
Ontario and then will get a packet off to you. You will have to give me
your mailing address again as I misplaced it.
Another spot in the writing it says Ashman Carpenter his wife Mary
Boyle along with Stephen Coon (1764-1805) are buried in St. Andrews
English Church Cemetery, Grimsby, Ontario.

My George Rancier Coon was born 13 March 1799 in Lincoln County,
Ontario. He died 10 March 1872 in Oxford County Ontario. Married 3 April
1822 to Deborah Phoebe Smith..born 8 February 1805 and died 6 June 1883.
They are buried in Quaker Street Friends Cemetery in Norwich. They were
parents of five children.. Elizabeth S.; Stephen; Mary; Phoebe; and
George Rancier II.
I have found George Rancier I parents listed in two different
places...the first is at the Family History Center and they have John
Stephen Coon...b 1762 NJ and Phoebe Carpenter. The other was just in
some old writings and I am not sure who did them...they have John S.
Coon and Phebe Carpenter.Do know from Grandfather that the Coon family
was United Empire Loyalist. Have found on the 1861 census that George
Rancier Coon I states his religion as Quaker.

John R. Carpenter
Recently I came across your answer to a question from Faye Hood regarding
Phoebe/Phebe (Have found it spelled both ways) Carpenter's husband Stephen
Coon.  Have also found that his first name may have been John.
According to information I have found, Ashman Carpenter and family migrated to
Upper Canada as Loyalists in 1783.  Soon after their arrival he became ill and
died in 1785 in Niagara, Lincoln Co., Ontario.  Since Phoebe M. Carpenter was
born in 1776, she had to have been born in Sussex County, New Jersey and not in
Saltfleet or Toronto as some records show.  My information comes from several
sources:  A History of the Coon Family by Stephen Burnell Coon (1862-1936),
several different volumes of "The Annals of the Forty" published by the Grimsby
Historical Society, "The Carpenter and Coon Families" excerpts received from
the Hamilton Genealogical Association and from family information.
My father carried the "Carpenter" name as a middle name.  John Stephen and
Phoebe had 6 children, the 6th, Stephen, was born a few months after his death
from injuries suffered when a tree fell on him while he was clearing his
property, Lot 4 Concession #5, Clinton Township, Lincoln Co., Ontario.  This is
the location of the births of all his children.  My records are as follows:

Pennsylvania Marriages before 1790: Two marriages given.
1768, June 16. Carpenter, Benjamin and Grace Morgan
1772, Aug. 10. Carpenter, Benjamin and Mary Morgan

Benjamin Carpenter was born near Woodbury, Gloucester, NJ just south and across the Delaware river from Philadelphia, PA. After the close of the Revolutionary War, he moved to Fauquier, VA (NOTE: NEVER PART OF , now W.Virginia), where his first and second (NOTE: not 2nd & 3rd) wives died. In 1797 he removed to Harrison county, VA (now WV). In 1804 to what is now Lawrence County, OH where he died in 1809.

NOTE: Fauquier, VA was never part of WV. There were two basic ways to get to Fauquier County from the Delaware River area between Philadelphia and Gloucester County, NJ.
1) By ship down the Delaware River to Delaware Bay then out to the Atlantic Ocean and back through Chesapeake Bay and up the Rappahannock River to a few miles southeast of Front Royal, Warren County, Virginia, near the single point where Warren, Fauquier, and Rappahannock counties come together. Then east into Fauquier County. This or something similar is most likely.
2) By land from Philadelphia west over the Philadelphia Wagon Road toward Washington, DC then southwest to the Old Northwestern Turnpike then eat into Loudoun County then south into Fauquier County.

To go to Harrison County, WV from Fauquier County is by land. North into Loudoun County then west on the Old Northwestern Turnpike over the Shenandoah Mountains until you get to Harrison County then part of VA.
To go to Lawrence County, OH from Harrison County you head west on the Old Northwestern Turnpike until you get to the Ohio River. Then use the river to float to Lawrence County. Note, there was also a trail that went inland (west of the river into Ohio) then south.

Dear John:
Found this at the Fonda Archives today in a book entitled "Calendar of
Wills". I love it because it is a collection of way back stuff that we can
no longer actually get our hands on.
I'm researching the Dunning family who lived in the same area as my
Carpenter family, ie. Hope and Northville, Hamilton Co. NY. Came across
this:
Will of Jacob Dunning written 1770 Oct 15, probated Nov. 1, 1770 of Goshen
precint, Orange Co., NY yeoman, mentions son John, Jacob and Benjamin,
dau.. Bathsheba, Mehitabel and Mary. Real estate some in Wawayanda Patent
and personal property. Exec. 3 sons Witnesses: James Carpenter of Orange
co, schoolmaster, John Conkling and Elizabeth Dunning.
Don't know if you had all those Orange Co. Carpenter's or not but if you
do, here is a tidbit for James..at least now we know he was a schoolmaster!
Marcia   (NOTE: THIS DATA PROBABLY FOR THE JAMES CARPENTER B. 1752 IN GOSHEN, ORANGE, NY.)

1508. Joseph Carpenter

Is the same person as below?
E-MAIL: 10 AUG 2000 from: Carolyn Bayer mabayer@borg.com
I have a copy of a land deed of Joseph Carpenter, JR made in 1800 where
he and Jesse Carpenter bought some land in Washington County.
It says Joseph JR is a farmer. It doesn't say where they came from
but Joseph was on the future census there and Jesse was not.
Joseph on 1810 and 1820. Last time Joseph was on, he
died in 1820. His family remained on in the following years. I also
have a copy of a land indenture made August 30, 1827. It was made by
his children to settle the estate of Joseph. It states that Joseph
died about 7 years ago. Seems that Solomon Thurston was granted
letters of administration and it was never done.  Here are the
children of Fannie Crandle and Joseph Carpenter: Sally b. 1796 m. Asa
Lanfear, Betsey b. 1797 m. Ephraim Holley (my line), James m. Alma no
dates, Clark C b. 1801 m. Deborah, Joseph III b. 1802 m. Lydia Baker,
Laura b. 1807 m. Albro Tripp and Thomas b. 1808 who m. Arsu (Ursala)
Evarts. Joseph was a minor at the time his father died. Joseph III and
Lydia loss their son Joseph in the Civil War. The AF has Thomas who m.
Ursala Evarts b. 1818 or something like that. They are on many census
and their age also is on the census. He and the Carpenter family
(meaning the ones listed here) are on the Warren County census for
many years. From the dates of birth of their children I imagine Fannie
and Joseph were m. circa 1795 and if they were around 18-20 at that
time it would seem like that Joseph could have been born in 1777. How
do I find out from the land deed where he came from?  I really believe
my Joseph could have come from the Orange County family. I am running
out of clues. Thanks again for everything.
