1512. Hannah Carpenter

UPDATE:  Constance Leaman < r.leaman@comcast.net> provided an update on this family on Sunday, June 13, 2004 .   GOOD JOB by CONSTANCE!   Her notes follow...

Notes for HANNAH CARPENTER:
My great great grandmother.

She is the daughter of Jesse Carpenter, (abt. 1755-1815) and Sarah Seely, (1762-1827). She lived a good, long life, 84 years, 5 months and 8 days.

Wm. H. Edwards says Hannah Carpenter Edwards is "of Chenango," but she was born in Goshen, Orange County, New York, moved with her parents to Elmira, Tioga County, New York, and met George Cunningham Edwards there (I think he was studying law there, or perhaps clerking at the time, married him, and moved with him to Bath, Steuben County, New York, where he was the first judge of Steuben County.

Amos B. Carpenter, The Carpenter Memorial, 162,  has her as the wife of David Roe. Her sister Clarissa is actually the woman who was married to David Roe. She is the only wife of George Cunningham Edwards, with whom she had 9 children. (A daughter Clarissa died at the age of two, and a second daughter was named Clarissa.)

Hannah Carpenter Edwards is mentioned in her aunt, Hannah Seely Cooley's will. Hannah Seely Cooley was Hannah Carpenter Edwards's maternal aunt:

Hannah Cooley of Elmira, 30 July 1822. "I am executor of my late husband Jonathan Cooley. Executor to sell land in Newburg NY. Nephews, Jonathan C. Carpenter, son of Jesse; Robert Carpenter, son of Joseph of Elmira; James Sayre. Nieces, Eloise Carpenter, Zerviah Maxwell, Hannah Edwards. Sisters, Sarah Carpenter, Elizabeth Sayre, Azubah Baldwin. Executors, Joseph and Jesse Carpenter of Elmira. Witnesses, William Maxwell, Azuba Seely. Probated 10 Feb 1823."

George Cunningham Edwards reassigned to this Hannah Carpenter pending proof.  Last speculation appears incorrect.  See below.  JRC  7 Oct 2002.
Dear John,
Thanks for your response. I think the naming conventions bear out the very strong possibility that Hannah was the daughter of Jesse Carpenter and Sarah/Sally Seely and the sister of Clarissa Carpenter. Now for some proof.

Dear Connie,
When you read the notes, you will find out that Frank Bradner states the his source has confused some of the Carpenters he submitted.  I concur.  I think this is one of those incidents.
Look at children, places and other similarities.  Take a piece of paper and add up the pluses and minuses for each possibility.  You will come to a conclusion but not proof.
This is the hard part.  The proof.  This means going back to the orginal sources and sorting the wheat from the chaff.
Enjoy the hunt!
And let me know what you conclude or prove!

I have been in touch with Frank Bradner quite a bit in the last several days.
I believe that you are suggesting to me that Jesse Carpenter is more likely the father of my Hannah Carpenter than Benjamin Carpenter, and certainly there are some names that make one wonder, not to mention the birth and death date similarities of the 2 Hannahs.
My great grandfather, John Edwards, whose parents are George Cunningham Edwards and Hannah Carpenter has a sister Clarissa Roe Edwards who married James Rowe Dudley. And my great grandfather named his first daughter Clara Dudley Edwards, obviously after the Clarissa and Dudley connection. At the same time, there is a Clarissa Carpenter, daughter of Jesse, who married David Roe.
George Cunningham Edwards and Hannah Carpenter stayed in Bath, Steuben County, New York, to which they had moved by 1823, when Alexander Edwards was born. My great grandfather, John, was also born there, as was his first daughter. I am descended from his 2nd wife, Constance Lucretia Hunter and 2nd daughter, Mary Constance Edwards, my grandmother.
I really don't know what to make of this confusion. Perhaps you can set me straight.
Connie

Dear Constance,
You have a small mystery and conflict of data. Compare the 2 briefs below. Each contains a Hannah Carpenter (*****). Look at the notes.
My guess is that George C. Edwards is matched with the wrong Hannah Carpenter.  Your thoughts?

Noah Ellis was a cooper in Newburgh NY, and later in Goshen NY.  He married Hannah Carpenter, (1807?). They
had 5 children? Lydia, Samuel,  Lewis, Susan, Harriet.

Records taken from an entry in "Richard Ellis and his Descendants" by E.R. Ellis, which says, "Noah Ellis with his
brothers John, James and Joseph were coopers living near Newburgh, NY and later in Goshen, NY"

Noah and Hannah had the following children:

He was the first judge of Steuben County.
DEATH: either 1857 or 1837.

1517. Samuel Carpenter

Number 1003 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 162
No family listed.  He married an Anna, probably after the Revolutionary war
and moved west.

Samuel enlisted in the Revolutionary war when he was 21 years of age July, 9,
1775 from Goshen, Orange, county, NY.  He applied for a pension Sept 27,
1832 when he was 78 years of age; he was then residing in Licking county,
OH.  His pension was allowed for ten months & six days service as a private
in the NY troops. A part of the time he served under Captain Denton and
Col. Clinton.  His widow Anna also received a pension for the services of her
husband as above.
Samuel the father (#344) is no doubt the Samuel who enlisted as a Sergeant in
Captain George White's Company, 2nd battalion, NY at Fort George on Oct.
13, 1775.  We think it is the same Samuel who enlisted as private in Captain
Daniel Denton's company, 3rd NY, commanded by Col. James Clinton, June
28, 1775.  This regiment was raised from Orange county, NY.  The Samuel who
served as private in Captain John Wood's company of exempt militia in the
county of Orange, NY in the service of the U.S. on different occasions from
July 7, 1778 to July 20, 1779 was probably Samuel the father (#344) also.

The records show in Adjutant General's office, War Dept. that Samul Carpenter served as an Ensign in the 4th Penna Reg. Revolutionary War. His name appears on an undated list of Pennsylvania Officers appointed by the Council of Safety, pursuant to a Resolution of Congress dated Sept 16, 1776. This list shows him commissioned Jan 3rd, 1777. Nothing further has been found of record relative to his services. See DAR #321982(Cleo's) In the history of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family, it says he enlisted "when he was 21 years old on July 9, 1775 from Goshen, Orange Co, NY. He applied for pension Sept 27, 1832 when he was 78 years of age, and was then residing in Licking County, Ohio. The 1830 Census of St. Albans Twp, Alexandria, Licking Co, Ohio shows Samuel Carpenter, Sr, a male between 70-80 (Sam was 76); a female between 50-60 (Anna Hillyar was 56); and a male child between 10-15, plus a female child between 10-15. (could these be grandchildren or children?) I also shows a Samuel Carpenter between 30 & 40; and a Benj Carpenter between 30-40 (Ben was 39)
The book, " Alexandria and St. Albans Township, Licking County Ohio", pub in 1952, page 21 states that one of the first families to move to St. Albans was the family of Samuel Carpenter, Sr, from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1805 they came to Rush Creek, Fairfield county, Ohio where they remained until the spring of 1809, when they removed to our township and settled on the farm known as the Carpenter farm, now the home of the Hubbard boys (now owned by Raymond Tatham.) Upon this farm and at the home of Samuel, Sr, was organized the first church (Alexandria Methodist) and within the walls of his dwelling was preached the first sermon within the bounds of our township.
St. Alban's township was organized in 1813, and the first election was held at the house of Samuel Carpenter, Sr, in the Fall of 1813. Probably the warmest and most exciting election ever held in the township was the one for the Justice of Peace in the year 1816 when Sam Carpenter, Sr was elected. The strife seems to have been between the Bray section and the Worthington road, and the contest was not only warm but bitter and determined, resulting in three elections and as many contests, and the defeated party is probably still dissatisfied.
The Licking County Courthouse burnt down in 1869 so copies of marriages, wills, probates, etc are lost to us.

HISTORY OF LICKING COUNTY - 554
CHAPTER LXIX.
Samuel Carpenter, sr., from Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, also settled with his family in this township in the spring of 1809. He came in 1805 to Rush creek, Fairfield county, where he remained until he settled here.
The first church was organized and the first sermon preached in the cabin of Mr. Carpenter, by Mr. Bacon, a minister traveling through the country on foot, carrying his saddle-bags on his arm, in 1810 or 1811. He remained over night with the

Carpenters, and preached this sermon to a small gathering of settlers. Rev. J. B. Finley, however, says, in his history of Methodism, that he preached the first sermon in that township, at the cabin of S. Carpenter, sr., late in 1810 or early in the following year. If he did so, he failed to make the same impression on the younger members of his congregation as was made by Mr. Bacon.
Mr. Carpenter erected the first brick house in the township, in 1821; and died in March, 1834, aged eighty-one. His son, Rev. Samuel Carpenter, settled on the farm adjoining his father's, and erected a brick residence in 1827, the oldest brick building now standing in the township. He was married to Mercy Cornell, December 21, 1809, by Rev. T. Harris, of Granville; and had they been married in the township, would have been the first; but, though both had been living in the township, and shortly after the marriage made this their home, they were married at the house of the bride's mother in Granville; hence the marriage of Gideon Cornell to Miss Julia Lobdell, July 17, 1810, was the first marriage ceremony performed in the township. Rev. S. Carpenter died in August, 1851, aged seventy-eight years.
591
The first election was held in the fall of this year (1813) at the house of S. Carpenter, sr.; the first trustees elected were Isaiah Beaumont, Peter S. Stephens and David Drake; the first clerk was Noble Landon, who named the township after his native place, St. Albans, Franklin county, Vermont. This privilege was accorded him in consideration of furnishing four gallons of whiskey to the seventeen electors present

Probably the warmest and most exciting election ever held in the township was the one for a justice in the year 1816, when S. Carpenter, sr., was elected. The strife seems to have been between the Bray section and the Worthington road, and the contest was not only warm but bitter and determined, resulting in three elections and as many contests; and it is safe to say the defeated party is still dissatisfied.

Born in Goshen, NY in 1767, he had married at Goshen on March 13, 1797.
Catherine Salmon or Solomon (family spells it the former way, Goshen register
latter).  He moved to Bainbridge the year of the date on the deed.  His share
of the property included about 250 acres including the land upon which the
village of Bainbridge is located.  For many years he kept a tavern there.  His
wife died in 1827 and he died in 1833, froze to death, I am told (in 1898) by
relatives, during a terrible blizzard. (per Amos B. Carpenter).

Early settlers in the Town of Bainbridge taken from "1874 History of Chenango
& Madison co.s, NY" by James H Smith; pub. 1880. Tried to use year, where
stated, person and where they were from.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
BAINBRIDGE was constituted a town and named Jericho, Feb. 16, 1791, at which
time it formed a part of Tioga county. Name changed April 15, 1814 to
Bainbridge. It originally included portions of Norwich and Oxford, which were
taken off Jan. 19, 1793; of Greene, one part of which wsa taken off Mar. 15,
1798, and another the following year; and the present town of Afton, which
was taken off Nov. 18, 1857.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Territory including this town was first claimed by Robert HARPER, under a
grant from the Indians, but State repudiated the title and granted it,
together with the town of Afton, to the "Vermont Sufferers", by whom the
first settlements were made.
The Vermont sufferers were persons who, by reason of their allegiance to the
Government of the State of New York during the controversy existing between
it and the State of Vermont, immediately after the close of the Revolutinary
war, relative to lands which were finally ceded to the latter State, were
dispossed of certain property and otherwise punished by the Great Mountain
State; and who, as a recompense therfor, were granted lands in the townshiop
of CLINTON, afterwards known as JERICHO [Bainbridge], embracing the whole or
the major portions of the present towns of Bainbridge and Afton.
Feb. 24, 1786, Col. Timothy CHURCH and Majors Wm. SHATTUCK & Henry EVANS, to
the former of whose regiment the majority of the sufferers belonged,
presented, in their behalf, a petition to the New York State Govement. [I
previously posted separately the list of "Vermont Sufferers", many of whom
soon after became settlers upon this tract and pioneers in this portion of
the State.]
The following persons also had grants, viz:
(a long list that includes)
1800
John CAMPBELL, Scotchman and Benjamin S. CARPENTER, Orange co. and
Major Frederick DEZANG, Frenchman; came from Geneva soon after 1800.

On Sunday last. about dark, a fire broke out in the office of the Orange
Eagle, owned by WILLIAM A. CARPENTER, in Goshen, which in a short time was
entirely destroyed, together with all the printing materals, a quantity of
pape,  the books, &c. not an article was saved.  The loss of Mr. Carpenter is

About Abraham CARPENTER he was 56 y 10 m when he died*, and is thought by Delaware County Family researchers as being a brother of Daniel J. CARPENTER, and they married twin sisters of Rev. Gilbert and Sarah CARPENTER, who lived in Goshen, Orange Co., NY and Luzerne Co.,PA before removing to Delaware Co.,OH abt 1809. No will or statement for Abraham, but he is buried in the same cemetery as Daniel, by his side is a son John, son of Abraham and Mary “Polly” CARPENTER, d 1820. Email from Florabel C. Lacher dated Saturday, October 23, 2004 stated the United States Census in 1790, the first census for Luzerne County, PA Kingston Township, lists Abraham CARPENTER on pg 146.
What do you have on Mary “Polly” CARPENTER? Do you have her date of death and source of this information. Also marriage application?

* My source is from tombstone inscriptions and other records of Delaware Co.,OH by E. W. Powell; page 14 Galena Cemetery

DEATH:
From the tombstone info, he died 8 Dec 1826 at age 56 & 10 months. This works out to be a birth of abt 8 Feb 1770.
But, per VR; Abraham, s. Abraham & Eliz(abeth), b. July 11, 1768; 1; 288 Orange county,NY.
