26071. William M. Carpenter

NAME: Went by Will.

Will was the son of DeWitt Carpenter and Emma Logan of Black Earth, Wisconsin. The family moved to Montana in the 1860s. Mary and Will lived on a ranch on Deep Creek near Townsend where they had a saw mill. They moved to a ranch two miles west of Logan, Montana where they lived for 38 years. Will started raising potatoes and became known as the "Potato King." He had a contract to furnish potatoes to the Northern Pacific Railroad for their dining cars. The railroad even put a siding on their track across from the ranch on the line that ran to Butte. Will also raised alfalfa and shipped it to different areas. They had a dairy of 60 milk cows, provided milk for Logan customers and shipped cream to the Townsend creamery.
Will, his brother George Carpenter, and his wife Mary also played for dances near and far for many years and as the children grew they each learned to play either banjo, mandolin or drums. Will and George played all the instruments as well as coronet and violin. Mary was an accomplished pianist. As the children were growing, every evening when the chores were done, they would gather and play together. Will played violin, one boy on violin, another on coronet and the girls played mandolin and piano. This was all by ear and they played beautifully. Mary and will had three boys and three girls.
Mary died in 1929 and is buried in Boulder Valley cemetery. The three boys had moved to California several years before. Will later remarried Edith Vaughn and moved to California also where he died in 1951. (Smith Dyer, 1995)
