33971. John R. Wilson

The Athens Times.  Wednesday, May 21, 1947.  John R. Wilson who runs the bump department at the Wilson Garage has finished what appears to be an impossible job on a badly wrecked Oldsmobile . . .

The Athens Times.  Wednesday, May 31, 1950.  John R. Wilson and wife and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Smith of Battle Creek attended a reunion of  1, 691st Calvary, Sunday in Chicago.  This was Mr. Wilson's outfit while stationed in Texas.

The Athens Times.  Wednesday, October 11, 1950.  Mr. and Mrs. John R. Wilson announce that little Douglas Elliott Wilson, aged three months, has come to make his permanent residence with them.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Wednesday, August 17, 1955, p. 9. Athens - John R. Wilson, 36-year-old garage owner, shot himself with a German war souvenir pistol at 6 p.m. yesterday half an hour after returning from Allegan where he was arraigned on a charge of negligent homicide.  Coroner Ralph Callahan said that Mr. Wilson's death apparently was the result of despondency over the accident Sunday night on M-89 in Allegan County in which Mrs. Alice Thompson of Fenville died and her husband was critically injured.  The Wilson car rammed the Thompson car in the rear, according to Allegan Sheriff Walter Runkel, while the Wilsons were returning from Saugatuck.  Mr. Wilson had asked examination of the charge against him and was released on bond of $2,500.  Theexamination was to have been Monday.  Mr. Wilson's wife, Mildred, heard the shot while returning from a neighbor's house and found his body lying in the basement shot through the head.  He used a pistol brought back from his World War II service.  Mr. Wilson was born Feb. 9, 1919, at Holt, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wilson and graduated from Athens High School where he was prominent in athletics.  He is survived by his wife; his father, with whom he was in business; a son, Douglas, 6; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Brickman of Pontiac, IL, and Mrs. Rose Dean of Bay City; and an adopted brother, Theo Crain of Waurika, Okla.  He was a member of Athens Lodge No. 220, F&AM, was a Royal Arch Mason, belonged to the Loyal Order of Moose in Battle Creek and the Veterans of Foreign Wars here, and was a member of the village council.  The body was taken to the Spencer Funeral Home.  Funeral arrangements have not been made. Thursday, August 18, 1955.  Services will be Saturday, August 20, from Spencer Funeral Home.  Burial in Burr Oak Cem..  (This is the first reference we find of the sisters named in this obituary, Alice Brickman and Rose Dean.)

OBITUARY.  The Athens Times, Wednesday, August 24, 1955.  John R. Wilson, 38, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 1955.  Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p.m.  Rev. Wm. E. Potts of the First Congregational Church officiated. Burial was in Burr Oak Cem..  John was born Feb. 9, 1917, at Holt, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wilson.  Graduated from Athens High School.  He was active in athletics; also a member of Athens Lodge No. 220, F&AM; a Royal Arch Mason; Loyal Order of Moose in Battle Creek; a member of the V.F.W. Post of Athens, and was a member of the Village Council.  He is survived by his wife, Mildred, and one son, Douglas 5; his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Brinkman of Pontiac, Ill. and Miss Rose Dean of Bay City; one brother, Theo Crain of Wauriko, Okla.  (Who are these sisters and brother surviving? The obituary above said that Theo Crain was an adopted brother.)

MARRIAGE.  Calhoun County Clerk-Register, Marshall, MI.  Marriages, book 10, p. 52, #275.  Married 30 July 1939 at Athens, Charles Burkhardt, age 39, of Burlington, MI, b. Burlington Twp., farmer; father: Charles Burkhardt; mother: Hattie Richfield; and Alison Tiffany, age 29, of Athens; b. Leonidas Twp.; nurse; father: Claude Tiffany; mother:Ethel Wells; witnesses: William F. Thomet and Fern Thomet, both of Burlington; officiant: Rev. J. E. Cook, MG.

In 1936 Alison was of Lansing, MI, according to her father's, Claude A. Tiffany's, obituary.  She is not mentioned in her mother's obituary in 1987.


33979. Lilah M. Tiffany

Akron, OH, laborer, father: Dale Hayes; mother: Ada Newman, and Lilah Tiffany, age 18, of Battle Creek, b. Factoryville, MI; father: Ray Tiffany; mother: Ettie Harmon, by Rev. R. D. Dean, MG; witnesses:  Delbert Thompson and Mabel Hayes, both of Battle Creek.

In 1937 Mrs. Milo Jackson was of Leonidas according to her mother's obituary.  In 1975 Lilah Tiffany Jackson was living in Mendon at the time of her father's death.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Monday, June 1, 1998, p 4A.  Lilah M. Jackson, 86, of Nottawa and formerly of Athens and Battle Creek died Friday, May 29, 1998, in Three Rivers Area Hospital.  She was born Feb. 2, 1912, in Athens to Henry R. and Mary Etta (Harmon) Tiffany.  She moved with her family to Battle Creek where she attended school.  She was a homemaker.  She married George Jackson in Angola, Ind., on Dec. 28, 1929.  He died in  1969. Surviving are daughters, Mary Perrin of Nottawa, Mildred Sharpe of Coldwater and Margaret Taylor of Mendon; sons, Gordon Jackson of White Pigeon, John Jackson of Bronson, Robert Jackson of Fulton, George Jackson of Sturgis, William Jackson of Phoenix City, Ala., and Richard Jackson of Mendon; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Tiffany, of Sherwood. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Alva Tiffany; a sister, Elvah Carr, and grandsons, Bobby Jackson, Michael Jackson, Kenneth Jackson and Charles Schull.  Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eickhoff Funeral Home, Mendon.  Burial: Mendon Cem..  Memorials:  Nottawa United Methodist Church.

27 Jul 1998 - a visit to Mendon Twp. Cem. located on M-60, west of Mendon, on the south side of the highway.  One marker reads "Jackson" across the top and "George M. 1898-1969" and "Lilah M. 1912-19--.  No date has been engraved in the stone, probably because of Lilah's recent death. Nearby is another marker which says, "Our Beloved Son, Kenneth Allen Jackson, Apr 29, 1966 - Feb 10, 1989."  Another joint marker is for John M. Jackson 1874-1957 and Mary L. 1882-1963.  Another single marker says "Lester W. Jackson, Pvt. U. S. Army, Nov 21, 1902 - May 5, 1974."

Carr.  Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Spencer Chapel for Kenneth and Dennis Carr, twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Carr of Hillsdale. They were born Tuesday at Hillsdale Health Center.  Mrs. Carr is the former Elva M. Tiffany and both she and Mr. Carr were Athens area residents until about four years ago.  Surviving are the parents; a sister, Linda; the maternal grandfather, Ray Tiffany of Sherwood, and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Carr of Jonesville.  Rev. Frank Wright officiated at the services and burial was in the Burr Oak Cemetery.
