Stephen\6 Carpenter was born c1748 in Providence RI [ABC], died at age 57 in 1805 at Edenton, Chowan Co. NC [REB].  He was a descendant of the Rehoboth branch of the English Carpenters in America:  Stephen < Gersham < Stephen < James < Samuel < William Carpenter [ABC].  He was a mariner and a ship's captain, homeported at Providence RI [REB].  During the American Revolution, he commanded the privateer ship "Jenny."  The "Jenny" was captured by the British HMS Charleston on 30 Dec 1780 in the James River of VA [PRO].  Among the documents captured aboard the ship was a letter of marque from John Jay, President in Congress, to Stephen Carpenter, commander of the "Jenny," dated 13 May 1779 that described the ship as a brigantine of 80 tons, mounting eight guns and with a crew of 25 men, belonging to Joseph Westmore and John O'Conner; records documented that she was running American goods between Petersburg, VA; Norfolk, VA; Portsmouth, VA; Edenton, NC; Roanoke, NC; Teneriffe, Canary Islands; and St. Eustatia, West Indies, in the period May through Dec 1780 [PRO].  Also preserved in this collection is a letter from Jershom Carpenter to his son Captain Steven Carpenter in Petersburg VA, mentioning that Gershom had recently visited Uxbridge MA and sharing news on the family [PRO].  About 1785 Stephen Carpenter married Mariam Miles, daughter of Stephen Miles who died in 1797 in Chowan Co. NC.  They settled at Edenton, Chowan Co. NC, where Stephen died in 1805.  His will, dated 21 Jan 1805, names his wife Mariam and their three children:
