Notes

3415. Jesse Carpenter Parsons

SEE: Jesse Carpenter Parsons "Memorial Record of Southern Minnesota", Lewis
Publ. Co. 1897. pg. 418.
Jesse C. Parsons, a resident of St. Peter, Minn.....has been a resident
of the state for 30 years. Born in Jackson Co. (W)Va.. His father,
Charles, and a grandfather, William Parsons, both natives of Virginia.
Mother of the subject was Miss Delilah Carpenter, a native of Virginia,
as was her father, Jesse Carpenter; but her grandfather, Carpenter, was
born in Mass. and descended from a Puritan family. The family moved to
Meigs Co. Oh., later to Hancock Co., Il. where they both died, aged about
80 years.
Jesse and wife, moved to Hancock Co. Il. located near Carthage,
where they lived until after the Civil War, when they came to Minnesota.
In 1862, Mr. Parsons joined Co. B., 118th. II. Vol. Inf. and was a
prisoner of the war.
1850 Wood Co WV census:
Andrew Parsons. 30 (1820) Eliza 28, Mary  7, Sarah 4, James 2/12.

3439. John Elliot Carpenter

Gilmer county is now in WV.

Jane Carpenter

See father's notes.
BIRTH: Either VA or OH.

3455. Thomas Tanner

Thomas Tanner was born circa 1837, married 1st Sarah Jane Long on 13
May 1860 2nd Emily Phillips 31 March 1865 and is listed as the son of Jesse and
Judy in both marriages. Sarah Jane was the granddaughter of David Daniel and
Nancy (Carpenter) Long and Thomas's first cousin, but once removed.

Children of William Tanner, of Jesse Tanner Sr., of Sudna Elizabeth (16)
Carpenter:
This marriage continues the confusion between ""Buffalo" Tanner (RIN 39221)
and "Ike" Tanner  (RIN 28455)  The orginal record had Thomas in the family of
Buffalo, but the Mowrey book had him in the Ike  family.  I have continued to
follow the Mowrey book and changed  Thomas to that family.  The reference is
found on page 98 of the Mowrey book.  Then under presure I had to switch him
back.

Sarah Jane Long

Sarah Jane Long was born 1843 in Jackson County and married Thomas
Tanner 13 May 1860 in Roane County, Virginia. Thomas was born 1837 in Jackson
County, Virginia and was the son of Jesse and Judith (Carpenter) Tanner
(Please note discrepancy in mother of Thomas Tanner!)

3457. Henry Lawson "Loss" Tanner

Henry was born around 1840, he married Jane Greathouse 29 October 1867.

The Mowrey Book and this orginal record are again in conflict.  In the Mowrey
book the following children appear in the Henry Lawson Tanner of Jesse Sr of
Sudna Carpenter.  A comparison to this orginal record is also shown:
Mowrey  Book
Orginal record
Zedock  b: 8  Jan 1872  d: 27 May 1962
Zedock  b: abt 1871
Marion Preston "Press "b:26 July 1876 d:20 Feb 1951
Marion Preston         b: abt 1876
Frenchman              abt    1883      aft     1969
Robert                 b:5  Apr 1884
Francis "Frank"
Jesse
Samuel
Lucretia "Creese"
Netty
James A.  b: abt 1867
Mary L.   b: abt 1869
Emma M.   b:abt 1874
It can be seen from these comparisions that the confusion continues, and it is
suspected that it all stems from the confusion between Buffalo and Ike Tanner.
To further confuse the families each of them was married 3 times, and each had
the same wife, Lucinda Raines, as their 3 wife.  While I find all of this
confusing, and some of it unlikely, I am reconstructing the genealogy in favor
of the Mowrey book and noting as per the above information as much of the
comparisions as possible.  I will leave the final family lines to someone more
qualified.

Children of Robert Tanner, of Henry Lawson Tanner, of Jesse and Judith (17)
Carpenter) Tanner  as shown in the Mowrey book, page  120 shows that there
should be a Robert Tanner in this family, neither of the orginal or previously
entered data, (from the Mowrey book) indicates this.  the children are shown
below.
1.Bessie Tanner was born 10 May 1916 at Creston (Wirt County) and married  in
Roane County 2 April 1933  Hallie Earl Shrader, son of Samuel T. and Rosa
Vevie   (Hedges) Shrader.
2. Icie Tanner married and divorced Roy Woodring. She was murdered, tied to  a
kitchen chair and shot in the head with a paper bag pulled down over her face
at  Creston. The crime was never solved. Some say that the killer was a man
named  Cambell with whom she had been living. Others speculate that it was a
couple of the  Greathouse boys who were always in some kind of serious trouble
with the legal  system. Nothing was ever proven in either case.
3. Raymond Clyde Tanner was killed in Germany during World War 2 at
twenty-nine years of age.

5601. Frenchman Tanner

Frenchman Tanner was born circa 1883, died after 1969 and married 26
September 1905 Mary E. Boggs.

3462. Nancy Tanner

Roane County VA became Roane County WV in 1861.
Nancy Tanner was born circa 1823 and married William Brannon Starcher.
Roane County VA became Roane County WV in 1861.

died age 7 days on 12 Jul 1894. info subm. by father Flyod Tanner.

Children of Jesse Tanner Jr., of Jesse Tanner Sr., of Samuel Tanner/Sudna
Elizabeth (16) Carpenter.  (This is taken from page 96 of the Tanner book.  It
appears that there is confusion in the families of Jesse "Buffalo" and Jessie
"Ike" Tanner and their children, as well as who they married.  In entering this
information I, John Proctor, am unable to determine which is accurate, so am
going by the consistancy of the Mowrey Book, even though it may be inaccurate.
All of the children given in the orginal record for this family are  shown  in
the Mowrey book, however there are 3 additional children in the orginal record,
Jesse, Henry and Rebecca Tanner, none of these children are shown in the Mowrey
book,  however I am leaving them in the family.
Jesse Tanner Jr. was born in February of 1825, died 1907 and married  Sarah
Jane Greathouse 4 November 1845.

3464. Mary Tanner

This marriage continues the confusion between ""Buffalo" Tanner (RIN 39221)
and "Ike" Tanner  (RIN 28455)  The orginal record had Mary in the family of
Buffalo, but the Mowrey book had her in the "Ike" family.  I have continued to
follow the Mowrey book and changed Mary to that family.  The reference is
found on page 98 of the Mowrey book.  Then under presure I had to switch her
back.

Malissa (Booher) Starcher, widow).

William was married first to Isabel (_________) they appear on the 1860
census along with children Martha age 5 & Alex age 2. William married second
on 22 Jan 1865 to Hannah Sherman in Roane Co. He was age 29, she age 21.
William married a third time in ,Calhoun,WV. 22 Sept 1867 to Melissa Booker
Starcher, d/o Jacob & Nancy Booker. William was a Confederate
soldier during the Civil War.  He served in Co. G. 60th Va. Inf. CSA.

This marriage continues the confusion between ""Buffalo" Tanner (RIN 39221)
and "Ike" Tanner  (RIN 28455)  The orginal record had William in the family of
Buffalo, but the Mowrey book had him in the "Ike" family.  I have continued to
follow the Mowrey book and changed William to that family.  The reference is
found on page 98 of the Mowrey book.  Then under presure I had to switch him
back.

Melisa Booher

Name has also been spelled Booker.

Minter Jackson Carpenter

Minter (19) Carpenter was born around 1869 and married Manda Tanner 14 May
1891 in Roane County. They were the parents of the James F. Carpenter who
married Flora Ann Mowrey on 14 January 1923 in Roane County.

3473. Mary Malinda Tanner

Here is another situation with an individual having two spouses named the John
Carpenter but who have different parents.  This Mary Malinda with the same
parents but listed as Mary, in one marriage, married John Carpenter.
Which one is the correct spouse is not known.
One of the Marys may have had for a father one of the two Jesse Tanners in the
file.

John A. Carpenter

Jackson county is now in WV.

John A. (17) Carpenter was born 1820-1823, married Mary E. Sharp circa
1850, resided in Jackson County in 1850 and died in Roane County after 1870.
(There is much evidence to suggest that Martha, Joseph and John A. were
actually children of Thomas (17) and Sarah (Wright) Carpenter and that
Stephen and Susan were children of John (16) and Sarah Ratcliff Carpenter.
Research is necessary!)
